preface...i may screw something up with the contract situation but bare with me :). i guess let's also assume it is a 3 year deal.

I know there are multiple threads out there on Landry right now but I wanted to get an opinion from cf.net on the value of Landry. I think signing him for the full MLE is very risky considering the health of his knee. I have said multiple times that I am very afraid he will need microfracture or some sort of major surgery when he starts playing on that knee regularly. The complete refusal by Landry's agent to have the minor exploratory surgery done worries me. I have had 2 ACL reconstructions and 1 microfracture on the same knee so it's not as if I am speaking from a position of complete ignorance on knee problems. I know they may deem the surgery unnecessary and inherently risky, like all surgeries, but with the condition Landry finished in to end the season I feel Morey is warranted to have been insisting on this surgery for months now.

Now there are reports of Tau Ceramica offering Landry a 2 year $14 million deal from european tv posted by a member of cf.net http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showpost.php?p=3803552&postcount=82 and from another member on spurstalk.com http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=101907 by way of the spurstalk member the deal is actually about $4 million after taxes. it looks like the full MLE ($5.58 mil) after income taxes is around $3.65 mil. i have no idea how NBA players are taxed so this is just a rough estimate but they seem comparable.

Finally, Landry has stated that he wants to remain in Houston and does not want to sign elsewhere so it seems like we are mainly fighting his agent on this contract.

So I ask you guys what is Landry worth?

I say he's only worth the minimum now.
That's until someone actually offers a bigger one. So we can match whatever the market offer is.

Sign him to a short deal. Then, if he's really worth it, we'll have to pay the man.

I say he's worth around $2M, give or take. With Dorsey, Hayes, and Scola to hold down the four, Landry is not as necessary. The potential signings of Mutombo and perhaps Mike Harris would mean even fewer frontcourt minutes for Carl. Honestly, I think the Rockets money would be better spent on a veteran SF than on Landry.

The roster cuts are difficult; some people have to go. I guess I'll reserve final judgment until that "minor deal" to create some roster space happens.

I'm somebody that is currently questioning whether this group with Landry is even good enough in the first place let alone potentially completely removing him from the equation altogether.

So let's pretend Baker remains stubborn, Landry refuses to get the required medical tests and he either walks or signs overseas. What's the alternative? What, replacing him with some Othella Harrington level player?

Barf. I recognize the risk involved by saying this but just give him what he wants already. Try to push for 3/4's of the MLE just so something is left over but we absolutely cannot afford to gamble with losing him altogether.

This standoff needs to end. So what if it involves sucking up most of the MLE to rectify Morey's big blunder of not giving him a two year deal in the first place? At least we would have him under contract and prepared to move forward with the rest of the offseason.

offering him 50% of MLE is just a ridiculous lowball. with the warriors offering turiaf about $4.25 million/yr, im glad they didnt make a run at landry.

Better question yet...If we lose Landry, who do we sign with the MLE?

turiaf's a center, c's are overpaid. he's also a 3yr vet and proven himself to be healthy after having open heart surgery.

I disagree. Landry is definitely worth 2-3 million. And by worth, I mean... if you just cut him loose, thats probably the contract he would pull. Landry is in the top 8 rotation, so I think 2-3 million is fair.

And you can't just match whatever the best offer is. If you lowball him, he's just going to sign a qualifying offer and jet because you are basically saying you aren't worth it. I mean... if he isn't worth anything to us then we should've just spent our MLE somewhere else and cut him loose. We obviously want him back though.

There isn't anyone worth offering the entire MLE to among the rest of the UFA's.
In fact there were very few players worth all of it IMO,nevertheless the point I'm trying to make is there are very few FA's left to sign anyway. The Landry situation has prevented the chances of splitting the MLE or of making a full MLE offer.

He's not worth the full MLE, and neither Tau Ceramica nor anyone else would ever offer the guy as much as that rumor spread by his agent or hoops world or whoever claims.

Well if Delonte West is getting the USA equivalent of 8mil I don't think its too far out of the question. A dunk machine like Landry could single handedly get a buzz going, put butts in the seats, sell jerseys, etc... I dunno, I am pretty much tuning everything Landry related at the moment. Its been on my nerves, put a huge damper on the offseason. Restricted us. Bad taste in my mouth.

Turiaf is not a center, but he has proven himself to be legit. Landry had a good streak of monster dunks and blocks, then came back from injury a shell of his former self. Not only that, his agent wont provide proof that he's healed. Half the MLE AFTER he gets the MRI. This is gonna turn into this years Verajao holdout.
