I start off by saying that Luis Scola was the heart and soul of our team and writing this pains me and with the understanding ill probably get bashed by some but also realizing, like many other threads have pointed out, we need to be realistic about the Summer of 2010. Luis will be a Restricted Free Agent next summer and will be getting a hefty raise but with the decreased cap space for next year this will cause some issues. As many have been pointed out we could just renounce his rights but this is FREAKING Luis Scola it would seem to me to be a waste to just let him go for nothing but cap space. I say we trade Scola now for young talent and help replenish our team for the future. His value is at an all time high so why not take advantage of it. Il look at Portland as a clear example…they are desperate to say the least and with the rumblings that Utah will match Millsap’s offer sheet they would make sense with all the young talent the Rox would love to have. I know trades are coming and we going to sign another free agent but look at what’s left on the table, very little and TMAC is looking more and more like he will be around till his contract expires. Morey/Adelaman are going for an up-tempo style and will be looking for athletic wings and bigs to run with Brooks, Ariza and Landry so now is the time to move the pieces we can. Realization that our season is lost has hit me and we are playing for the lottery baring any huge trades which I doubt more and more will happen as each day passes . So my questions are these: Trade Scola now and get quality players in return? Or Wait till next summer try to see what we can do with his salary while hope a big ticket free agent comes aboard? Thoughts everyone?
I think it's stupid if we don't trade him. We're rebuilding. He isn't young enough to be part of that. I love Luis Scola - but he just isn't part of the Rockets future anymore.
I'd only be happy trading Scola as part of a package to get us a real superstar, the type of player that you can build around with legit hopes for a ring. Obviously Scola alone won't get you that player. But until we get a true franchise player (and then another... maybe another after that) we're just pissing in the wind. I love Scola, but if he can help land us a real cornerstone, then I'd be comfortable trading him. Would I trade him for a non-star? No. With Scola on your team, you basically don't have to worry about the power forward position. He does his job and does it well. That's tough to improve on.
I thought we were on a 2yr "rebuilding" plan. Why should we go 100% young? For the sake of being young?
Scola is a foreign, white, not young, no potential, no dunks, no tattoo. He will always be underrated in NBA. We can do a Landry on him (suspected injury toward the end of the season) if Morey is ready to sell his heart and soul.
He's not an unrestricted FA next year. As Hollinger's pointed out in one his articles, the fact that most of the restricted FA's this year (David Lee, Millsapp, Marvin Williams) aren't getting anywhere near their market value speaks well for our chances to re-sign him next year. Keep him.
You wait until the season starts for him to be the #1 or #1A option on team, averaging like 18/10 or something. Then you trade him...
Anyone can be traded on this team, depending on if we are getting a good deal or not. We are not going to trade anyone just for to make a trade. Scola is no where close to being untouchable.
I don't know where you got that from. But until we get somebody who can carry our team to contention, we're rebuilding.
It's a tough call for Morey, since we probably can't resign him if we go for a big time free agent next Summer. If that's the case, he should be traded at the deadline for an expiring and a first round pick. Better to get something for him than to lose him for nothing.
for the right price, no one is untouchable (on our team). in short, yes i would trade him. if the right deal came along.

It would have to be a very very good deal. But as of now, I don't think it would be a wise decision, especially for just a "draft pick".
