If the only way to acquire Mike Miller is to take on Cardinal's contract, would you do it. Cardinal has 2 years left at a little over $13 million total and Mike Miller as 2 years left at little over $18.7 million. We would have to trade all our expirings, BJax, Head, Francis, Woods, Harris, Novak, and re-sign and trade Deke to make this work, along with at least one and probably two draft choices. How many of you are down with that?

This is probably more Rockets Game Action than NBA Dish material, but...

Miller makes enough right now that eating a poison contract is a steep price tag for the Griz to ask, especially since most of the league is right at or over the luxury tax threshold anyway.

I'll go ahead and say that S&Ts involving Mutombo are off the table. No need to toss them in even as a hypothetical.

Jackson, Hayes, Head, and $3 million in cash is probably our offer for Miller. Brooks may need to be offered in place of Luther.

My starting point offer to Memphis for Miller alone would be B-Jax/Head/#25 pick. I think that's a fair offer considering the expiring contracts/no long-term commitments they're seeking plus it arms them with another first-rounder. When you're in perennial rebuilding mode like they are, short-term commitments and draft picks are the way to go.

Adding Cardinal's contract to the equation complicates things too much. If we targeted a Miller/Cardinal package we would almost certainly have to include a Scola, Battier or somebody else important to make the salaries match. Mind you, in terms of matching salaries B-Jax's deal is nearly equal to Cardinal's alone.

There will be no sign and trade of Mutombo going to Memphis.

I wouldn't take Cardinal's contract. Also, I'm not sure if Grizzlies would trade for solely expirings when Millers contract is only 1 year longer than BJax, Francis, etc etc. I'd assume they'd try to work a trade for young talent or draft picks.

I'm not sure Mike Miller is the answer to our problems and adding him while having to take on Brian Cardinal's contract is more than an albatross its salary cap suicide.

If we really want Mike Miller then I'd go with baller4life315's proposal of offering Head,Jackson and 25th. I'd maybe even sweeten the deal by offering Brooks instead of Head but thats it.

I would take Cardinal in a heartbeat although we couldn't create that much salary to match. We are over the cap anyways, so who cares if we take on a bad contract (other than Les). Also it gives us a huge expiring contract next season in which to bring in another contributor from a team looking to clear space. Cardinal's contract could really wind up paying off. The only downside I see is the luxury tax. And Les has to pay that not me.

Cardinal would be a good fit here so why not, hes another shooter and 2 years isnt that much of a commitment, after this season hes another valuable expiring contract.

How, though? How do we get both Miller and Cardinal without giving up Battier or Scola? Where does that extra salary come from? Even when you add in Francis' expiring deal to the B-Jax/____ package we're still not even close. They certainly wouldn't take on Rafer.

    Also, Cardinal's contract doesn't expire until 09-10.

I assumed he expired next year.

Ya, I totally agree it would be impossible to actually add Cardinal. Thats why I said we couldn't create enough salary to match. Unless we traded someone we need. Theoretically though, in magic land, if we could somehow take on his contract, then I would.

Morey is a superb talent evaluator. Why cripple our team in the salary cap when you know Morey can do more with 1 million (Brooks, Landry) than most teams can do with 5? Just have faith.

I don't mean to be a dork, but the addition of Brooks and Landry had nothing at all to do with the salary cap - we drafted both of them and have the right to sign them no matter our cap situation.

    Can someone clarify for me:

If trading with a club that is under the cap, are we able to trade the 'rights' to Bobby Sura and then have that count as a 'quasi-contract' when making a trade? The same would apply for Justin Reed? And Jackie Butler?

There's $7m in trade value, add in BJax ($6m) and the Hayes/Harris/Woods combo ($3m) and you got yourself a deal.

Help from the capologists as to whether this is legal/ under what circumstances you can send a player that isn't under your roster as part of a deal!

No. We don't have no rights to players that we cut. BJax + Francis + Head + Woods + Novak should be enough salary to get the deal done. Or, if they wanted our first rounder instead, we could keep Novak, draft the player that they wanted, then trade the rights to that player along with the other expirings to get the deal done.

I voted no. I don't think Miller is worth tying up our whole salary cap up and filling out our roster with rookie FAs. I think we should offer Memphis this year's first, our 2010 first, BJax, Woods, Novak and cash. They use the cash to buy out Novak so we can sign him back. If they don't want to do that deal or a modified version of the deal with Head or Francis instead of Woods, Novak, then we move on. I have confidence Morey can find us value.

If only 2 years left, That's not much. So Memphis might not be that much interested.

I believe that Memphis turned down a package from Miami that included dumping Cardinal and getting back expiring contracts (Jason Williams/Ricky Davis) at the trade deadline, so the poo-poo platter of a crap pick/Jackson/Head/Hayes isn't going to get it done anytime soon, in my opinion. Even if it did, if you are willing to take on Cardinal, you might as well include Landry in a sign-and-trade, because there's no way in hell we'd be retaining him while adding about $5 million to a payroll that will already be over the tax line.

I'm sure they'd rather deal him because they're looking for cap space next offseason according to their moves.

Will anyone offer them anything more than expiring and pick for Mike Miller? I doubt it.

No one will take on Cardinal's contract and return ALL expiring contracts.

Maybe we can offer them cash in the deal which would go towards cutting Cardinal, lol.
