I'm not big in sports betting, but considering that the Rockets are waaay underrated by the media and general public who don't really pay much attention to this team, would it make sense to bet some money on this team?

for 10-11 season, ESPN and other media experts all place us as a 2nd-tier team with playoff seed lower than 6, so does it make financial sense to bet against the public on the entire season? maybe make some money out of our Rockets love?

I know some people make a living based on sports betting but generally over long term it's a losing battle. But maybe in this special circumstance the upcoming season could be different.

pls lock if this topic is inappropriate.

Straight up bet with the Spurs guy? Or do you ever get any odds/does he get any odds? I have a Spurs friend who I may start this tradition with - sounds fun.

You mean bet on them to win it all?

The favorites are LA and MIA, for good reason. However, that doesn't mean we won't be in the mix, or that we won't be contenders.

If were putting money on them to be higher than a 6 seed, then I'm all over that.

Depends on what we're betting for. I'm pretty risk averse with this stuff. I'd be willing to bet we'll get into the playoffs. I think we'll actually make it to the 2nd round at least (but I'm not willing to bet on it). But I wouldn't ever bet a team is going to win the championship unless it was say the 97 bulls because the probability that a championship team in any given year will repeat in the following year is less than a fair coin toss. And I don't bet on coin tosses.

I live in Vegas part time and I'm working on an NBA season spread sheet...will post later in NBA forum for advice.
There is no 2nd rd bet that I know of. The bets you can make are to win a championship, win your division, and over/under # of wins (which doesn't exist in all sports books).

Last year, the Rockets were predicted to win 33.5 games, or something like that. So you could put down $100 on the over and if the Rockets won more than 33.5 games, you'd have won about $91 (they take a fee). You can also bet the under.

Vegas has not come out with this season's lines yet, afaik. I'm working on my predictions first. Vegas was only +/- 3 games of win totals for like 12 of the 30 teams last season. It's a hard thing to get right. Who would have thought that OKC would go from 25 to 50 wins or for NJ to win 12 and for MIL to win 46 and for PHO to win 54?

I wouldn't bet my money for them to win it all. but you're right, just to bet on them getting a higher playoff seed, say, 2-5th.

And if we're underdogs all year long, it would make sense to bet on each individual games to win, right?

Any bet on the Rockets to win it all is a bet on Yao to stay healthy. if you have some inside info on Yao's feet and how we can be sure that he really will be fully rehabilitated that I think your chances are good. I personally think that my be too much risk versus reward. But if the odds are like 100 to 1 I would do it for a hundred bucks. Okay maybe just 50 bucks.

I'd be willing to lay some money down on the Rox, they are an enigma in many ways and those are the best longshot bets IMO.

What are the odd's on the good guys again?

Side-note...I think the Celts are like 10-1 or 15-1 to win the crown, or something like that, I would kill to get me some of that action!

Sometimes we do straight up other times odds, this year, I am going straight up, they are old and we are up and coming, I think we pass them.

I love my rockets but I love my money just as much. Betting on long shots in the NBA is just stupid. How many longshots have won it all?

The pistons were the closest thing to a surprise in the last 20+ years. We were the lowest seed to ever win at all but we were also the defending champs. Unfortunately there are no surprises in the NBA when it comes to championships.

The only problem with this thinking is that if we start the season 9-1 or 8-2 the lines will start to swing in our favor and we may actually be OVERrated for a few games. I think the safest bet would be OVER for our win total. As long as it's 50 or less.

LOL, they are not going to be underdogs all year long. The oddsmakers will probably have them as a small favorite on their first home game against Denver. This link shows all the NBA teams record against the spread last year. The Rockets were 42-40 overall last year but 37-45 against the spread. I guess they weren't that "disrespected" last year. Interesting that the two most popular teams the Lakers and the Cavs both had losing against the spread records last year.

I want to wait and see if we get 'Iggy' before making any commitment!
With Iggy we would certainly be in the mix, without him I see it being a struggle to contend. We need to be super strong through 10 players to beat Miami or Lakers :p
    EG:-
    Brooks, Lowry
    Martin, Lee
    Iggy, Budinger
    Scola, Hill
    Yao Ming, Miller

As long as we have that giant IF on our team in the form of a 7'6 center, I wouldn't bet on the Rockets. The biggest flaw of our team, is that we are always one leg injury away from mediocrity. Until Yao proves he is recovered or at least still serviceable, the Rockets are still a dark horse team.
