Let's assume you are running a startup. Let's also assume that someone applies who is actually quite qualified and does well in interviews. You google the person and find some Youtube videos and some articles of the applicant from the student magazine, a few years back, at a very leftist university known for incidents of professors being shouted down. It seems pretty clear that the applicant was/is a SJW. Now, there is not necessarily anything wrong with that, but would you be somewhat concerned about that person possibly becoming a troublemaker in your company?
I would certainly view them as a potential problem and if there was another person equally qualified I'd take them over the SJW unless they had an even worse red flag.
I have to hire attorneys and staff for my firm. I will not hire SJW’s or people with extreme political or religious beliefs.
Not at all. Much rather have someone like that than a sheep. And I'm not just saying that. When I was a teacher at Dulles High School, I had a student who challenged me several times. You know, the "What's the point of doing this, Mr. D.?" kind of thing. The type of thing where you just want to say, "Do it b/c I said so." But I didn't mind him challenging me, really. I always felt the kids who would do that would go on to be the innovators (and maybe a few might be troublemakers, but more often than not, they would be successful). Obviously, there are rules people have to follow, etc. But as a company owner, those who are receptive to their employees concerns, and know how to handle the SJWs, ultimately wind up creating a stronger company- at least that's what I've heard from the people I've talked to over the past 17 years.
I think that's part of the risk of what you share online. Under the court of law, a minor committing the same criminal offense as an adult is given some leeway in terms of punishment generally. For instance, the affluenza kid or the college kid rapist Brock Turner, all were given minor slaps on the wrist because it's assumed they'll grow out of it. Contrast with a SJW at least on the surface that has done nothing criminal (and since this is for a job, I assume HR's background check process will verify that), and exercised peaceful protest. I guess my argument to perhaps consider the candidate is, a young college kid voicing their opinion peacefully may have changed over the years once settled down with a family or some other major life changing circumstance. All of a sudden things like mortgage payments, savings for kid's college, managing utility expenses, affordable at home fixes than can be done if needed, making sure the kids did their homework and aren't up to anything they shouldn't be and keeping a happy wife take priority. And that may be the ultimate collection of reasons to apply for the position at your business in the first place. In terms of getting a first impression, or even a second impression if you do a second interview, it may not be worth the risk to you which is fine. We should all be held accountable for our past actions. (Un)fortunately for some, their past is more publicized than most which can be both a good and a bad thing depending on how you use it. Work hard and decorate yourself with a series of accolades that can be verified from reputable sources online? That's doing it right. Seen tear gassing a professor trying to leave from their car on campus to their classroom? Probably gonna have some explaining to do, which is fair.
All things equal of course you hire the person less likely to be offended. Not caring about others' insulting opinions is admirable in my book.
bigots, racist, white supremacists, and neo-nazis fit perfectly under your "Not caring about others' insulting opinions is admirable in my book" category
In my small business, the problematic employees are the ones with a low motor, who don't get engaged, and just want to show up, do the minimum, and get paid. An SJW might be annoying or cause trouble, but at least they are engaged and they think the things they do matter. That sounds pretty promising to me. If they cause trouble after they're hired or they spend more time b****ing than working, we can just fire them. Texas is a right-to-work state, after all.
I also consider loving your kids as being admirable. so do white supremacists and racists. OMG! what have i done! In general my advice would be to not give anyone the power to alter your mood/demeanor with insults. sticks and stones and what not.
I would imagine those would be "problematic" employees much like SJW's so you'd want to avoid them as well. There's also a lot of crossover between bigots, racists, and SJW's, so they can have multiple red flags at the same time.
it can go both ways. What if you bring in a pence type. You and your boys are celebrating your company being launched, throw a little bash. One of your boys, there is always one, brings in "entertainment" that you "forgot" to disclose to your girlfriend and he also brings 'recreational' enhancers. All of the sudden you hear sirens. busted for possession and the entertainment turns out to be a runaway teenager of 15 years of age. You're not a politician so you won't be able to get away with it. This new straight and narrow guy ratted you out. Now your company is in shambles. Everyone that had invested has withdrawn. The girlfriend leaves you for a pizza delivery guy from East texas. You're forced to sell your company at 10 cents on the dollar and end up having to male strip to pay the bills. One day after finishing your cardio session at 24 hour fitness, you get gunned down, some essays thought you were a member of a rival gang when in reality you were the biggest astros homer just representing your team. Your life flashes and all you can think of is, I shouldn't have hired that mofo with the pleated khakis.
Different situation in Germany, not easy to fire people. Also, before I bring someone over from Seattle all the way to Germany, I want to be sure about it, for my company's sake, and for that person's sake. Thanks for everyone's perspectives so far.
If this SJW would be a foreign national in Germany, I think they would make less fuss than they would in their home country. Unless this is a German expat coming home.
Unless my company was specializing in a highly unethical business, or if I knew I had culture problems that could be exposed I wouldn’t care at all. If you are running a company to be proud of, a SJW could potentially express that same level of passion to what your company does, believes in, and be a top performer given their passion. But no.... if I was running a debt collector business, or a predatory student loan business, I would think twice about hiring a SJW and would probably profile people who are more drone minded. You'd be surprised about how granular you can get on psychometric employee profiling for new hires. That is nothing new.
