Brian Grant comes to the Rockets. (I dont know how, sign and trade or just sign with the Rockets outright).

Rockets select Demarr Johnson with the 9th pick.

    Our lineup next year:

    Hakeem
    Grant
    Demarr
    Shandon
    Steve

    Backups:
    Cato
    Kenny
    Mobley
    Moochie

    When Hakeem retires we have:
    Cato
    Grant
    Demarr
    Shandon
    Francis
    and Mobes
and hopefully enough money to get a premier big man like Duncan or Webber.

I think I would be completely satisfied with this scenario. Plus we woudl still be owed a (hopefully) lottery pick from Pistons and another pick from Orlando.

That would be ideal. However, you will probably have to remove a few names from the Rockets in the sign and trade.

Obviously a sign and trade is the only way we could get Grant. Even if the Rockets found some way to "Retire" Hakeem and shed his salary (which I still believe they can't do) we still wouldn't have near enough money to sign a person of Grant's calibre.

The Blazer's, having just unloaded Williams, Rogers and Cato on us last year will most likely not want them back, so that leaves us being able to offer Anderson, Francis, Olajuwon, Bullard, Drew, Thomas. Not going to happen.

My opinion is that Grant has decided to opt out of his contract because there is a high possibility that Chicago and Orlando will have excess cap space after they miss out on Duncan and Hill.

One other thing I'm not certain about - once a player has "opted out" of the last year of a contract ,can he even do a sign & trade? I'm not sure. Anybody who is, let me know.

Even if we pick him, DerMarr won't be starting at small forward any time soon.

Demarr won't be starting next season, i think he'd be great off the bench with Anderson-Mobley and Francis as three guards. But, anyway that side would be great Grant and Demarr and all that free agent space when Hakeem retires, plus (and don't all shout at me for this) but I think we won't be making the playoffs this year so another lottery pick to add to the squad. i think Houston is definitly a team to watch in the 2001-2002 season.
