I'm presuming the circumstances of his arrival here need no explanation, so I'll ask: would it be a dick move to use him as filler if a trade to nab a really good fit needed another 2 million?

Why? Barry has been traded multiple times. He knows who he is and is aware this league is a business.

But I'd rather not trade the mango tree.

yes it would but we have to do w/e it takes to get better. love the guy but if we had him a yr or 2 yrs ago that could hav helped. i mean we might as well have re signed jon barry from espn if we wanted to get brent. i can only imagine what his knees feel like....i expect retirement because i dont think he can contribute at all

If he can be used as a filler in a trade that can help us,it should be done. Locker room presence and a few outside shots sans defense isn't enough reason to keep him on the team.

    1. Veteran presence is always welcome.

    2. Next season's the last year of his contract. Let's have him end his career in Houston, like Rick and Jon. It's a family tradition.

    3. Barry can still play. Ball handling, decision making, the 3 ball, passing, he can still be a valuable contributor. I know a lot of people are down on him right now, but I'm still convinced that he could take minutes off Wafer. Sometimes Von makes such boneheaded decisions, it's ridiculous.

he's only got a year left and it's not like his contract is valuable. we already have tmac's 23mil as expiring :)

Kind of a dick move yeah, but that is part of the business. He knows he is at the bottom of the totem pole right now besides being like a player coach for the team.

No, he hasn't lived up to his contract. It's not like he's playing for peanuts.

Don't trade him. This is the guy who once won the slam-dunk contest with his warm-ups on.

lol, if you ask me any trade where the player ends up on a non-contender/lack-of-playing-time situation is easily a dick move. Either way, it doesn't matter...unless you are a BOF

If the Rockets only want to trade his contract as filler, and still want him back on the bench, it should be easy enough to negotiate for the other team to release him, and the Rockets can sign him back after a month. Spurs did precisely that.

And to answer the original question, no it's not a dick move when the contract say you can do it.

Not at all, the NBA is a business, he would probably get bought out anyway, and be free to sign with a new team.

    Heck San Antonio did it...

HUGE D-Move. Huge. Can't stress enough how bad a move like that is (unless Barry agrees, is released, then resigns) for PR. You HAVE to treat veterans with class if you hope to draw FAs in the future. You absolutely cannot do that to Barry. Why not sign and trade Weatherspoon or whoever we still have the rights to and leave Barry alone.

Yes. That is, if they sold him the idea that he'd retire as a Rocket like his father and brother as was claimed.
