Jordan Hill, who showed us so much last night....as we all know....was the 8th overall pick in the 2009 draft....at a salary of $4.3 mil! We all have witnessed how great Morey has done drafting late in the first round, and second, not having to give the players as high of a salary as the high draft picks. I remember Morey saying "We're going to replace Landry in the draft." Maybe he didn't want to give us too much information....show his cards....maybe he was letting us know that with Hill, they have already replaced Landry in the 2009 draft. He showed us last night that he can hustle, shoot from the outside, he has decent foot work, and most importantly, can finish with either hand. But to get back to the point of this thread. Why would the Rockets want to draft high in the first round....to have to pay a high salary to a player....when they've proven to be able to still find talent later in the round. Do you think the Rockets will trade their pick? Or do you still think they'll use Hill as trade bait? I can also see them trying to trade down, to maybe nab a potential superstar....thoughts? Any one with knowledge of the Rockets cap situation please educate us (me).
Is this even a question??? Who in their right minds wouldn't want a high draft pick? We're talking about lottery picks here, not late 1st and early 2nd which may be a different case.
If Morey gets a Top 3 pick then he will choose a player he likes with the potential to be special but other then that, he will look to ship that pick out for the final piece to the puzzle.
Jordan Hill, in the THIRD year of his rookie contract, will make about $2.7M. I don't know where you're getting your numbers. If the player Morey wants is there at #12 or so, he'll take that player. If he's not, Morey will try to trade back. The Rockets aren't going to run away from a good prospect because they might pay a couple of million in luxury tax next year.
Technically, we shouldn't. We already have Hill, who most are penciling into becoming the backup (or future) PF/C for our team, along with Jeffries, Armstrong and Andersen on the books for next season (Hayes is a maybe if the Rockets bring him back), along with Scola hopefully. Our swingman position has Battier, Ariza, Martin, Budinger and Taylor on the roster as well. Really, the only position we could require a quality draft pick for would be PG and with a healthy Brooks and Lowry that isn't even necessary. I mean Adelman loves sticking with a 7-8 man rotation throughout the season. Pretty much, we should be set at most positions. The only reason to get a high draft pick would be to package it for a big name players, although I personally, don't even think there is one worthwhile that we can get that would be worth it. Maybe Amare, although I don't think we will get him and my personal favorite Josh Smith is stuck in Atlanta.
Is this a serious question? If Morey is already finding talent late in the first round imagine what he could do with a high draft pick.
yes, a lottery pick where you would have to pay the player guaranteed money around $2- $4 mil......I'm sure the fans, and Adelman would love a lottery pick....I'm talking about Les, who has to write the checks..(business)

um...no I was just playin That's why I asked for your thoughts, I'm very aware of what DM could potentially do with high draft pick...I'm talking business sense....I could see the rockets drafting high and maybe trade him or whatever....The QUESTION is, if they did draft high, do you think the Rockets would actually sign him? Given that the player contract would have to be guaranteed (correct?) I'm not aware of their cap situation, and what options they'd have...that's why at the bottom I asked if someone could educated me in that matter.

He has a qualifying offer for $4.8 mil his 4th year. If he does end up being Landrys replacement, then DM strikes again....Landry will definately make more than that after his contract is up... Edit: His 3rd and 4th year are also team options...so two of the players Morey traded for from NY could potentially both expire next year.
I don't know about trading back, especially if DM sees somebody higher in the draft that he wants. I can see us stealing, say, the 4th-best player in the draft at the 7th pick. That would be a player that could contribute come playoff time, at a very low salary, with a boatload of potential. I think we have enough trade bait to go for a move-up in the draft, plus a S&T. It could happen!
I'm sure Les would love himself a Brandon Roy even if it means he has to pay 2mils more. Remember we missed Roy by 1 pick, ONE FREAKING PICK! In the lottery you may get a chance to draft the Roys, Durants, Rubios, Curries. I mean Landry is nice and all, but he ain't a super star and I doubt he ever becomes one. Budinger? Nice role player, nothing more. In business, it's called investment. If 2-4 mil gets you an impact player, you will laugh your way to the bank several years later. I hope Les isn't as dumb as you are...
Udoh and Brackins appear to be the types of 4's Morey would go after. It is way too early for their projections and neither of them have talked about declaring, so we'll see what happens. They both have good range on their jumper and are dominant big12 rebounders and both can block shots as well.
Then your title is misleading.. Its entirely possible the rockets could actually draft a player..then trade him to another team for a superstar because next year is supposedly "win now". Financially Les Alexander has made it clear he would pay up.
What Duluth said. Also should be noted that although some franchise level players might be moving this summer, it's pretty rare overall. Those guys are almost always high draft picks that stick with thier team throughout thier career.
A high lottery pick is an asset. We might keep the player or we might trade the player to get better. It might even work like it did with Greene where we trade players and still get who we want. Which is the better situation salary cap wise My dream.. we get a pick and trade that pick for a lower first and a second.. we draft Greg Monroe and Willy Warren.
