For over a year now, we have been planning for this season as the moment we would finally be contenders again and now with Yao's news coming out, does this effect your outlook on the season and what you would consider a successful season? We know the parameters under which Yao will be playing for most of the season, if not all, so would a return trip to the playoffs be enough to satisfy or does this team need to contend for a title in 2010-11?

Making the playoffs is the peak of current team.

But Rockets really need to compete for the last spots of the ranking for next 3 seasons.

Every season is a failure unless you win the championship.

With this depth, anything less than the WCF would be a disappointment. Honestly, though, without a franchise tag, my interest in the NBA is going to wither away. Without parity, what's the point?

No reason why the Rockets shouldnt be in the WCFs this year.

Anything less than secound round would be a dissapointment imo.

At this point, right now...less Yao equals less success.
Unless management lets Yao off his chain later in the season, early playoff exit.
    Failure.

Season ending Yao injury= disappointment because of exercise in futility

    1st or 2nd exit= disappointment w/ caveats

    7 games against a top 3 team = encouraging

WCF= I haven't been this excited in years...

Enough trips to the playoffs, time to actually get something done when it counts.

Agreed.... Also, our window of opportunity is closing with Yao and if we want to seriously contend we will need to go all in sooner rather than later.

I agree with that also, but for us, making the WCF would send a huge message to the rest of the league!!

    Western Conference Finals or bust!!

Yao is in the last year of his contract, we know that he's not going to be a hundred percent, but when you look at our roster, this is the best chance that we have had and will have for a ring with Yao.

Either way, Im looking forward to some rockets basketball!

Sorry, but who are the 7 (so far) who voted that a trip to the playoffs would be fine? If there's no serious title run we should all be crushed.

Now, there's some leeway as to what constitutes "a serious title run". I consider the postseason of '09 a serious title run. We took the best team in the world to 7 games; if we'd won that 7th game, we may seriously have won it all. (We'd already beaten Denver 2 out of 3 that year, and we totally dominated and dismantled the Magic that season. We coulda won it all without Yao and T-Mac, making as an unlikelier champ than the '04 Pistons.)

Shoulda coulda woulda. It's what Fran Tarkenton and the Vikings and Jim Kelly's Bills were always saying. (Sorry for the nonstop NFL references, but it's hard to find a consistent bridesmaid team in the NBA.) It's time to do it or screw it.

Of course, even if the Rockets lose 60, we'll continue to support them. But this is our time to shine!

I voted trip to the finals, but my minimum goal is 2nd round. I just want to see progress.

If we make the WCF I will likely quit my job, drop out of school, and tattoo my entire body red.

Even if we got a superstar, how could we possibly win a championship when Miami has three superstars. The only way we win a championship is if we can get four superstars. That would give us one more superstar than Miami, and we could probably win a championship. Right?

i predict we win 50 games this season just getting the 7th seed in the playoffs. lose a tough 7 game series and everyone will be saying "wait next year when yao is healthy" ;)
