Would telling your team you won't resign be the same as asking for a trade?

My point is for CP3 and DH, they are not a fan of their current situation. So if the Magic or the Hornets ask if they'd resign and they said no, is that the same as asking for a trade in their last year of contract?

Also, if teams are bidding for their services, do you think the teams trading them will get more or less back if they don't specify which teams they'll sign extensions with? I.e. would having 3 teams bidding on a player they know is locked up for six years yield better offers than 29 teams bidding on a player that could potentially for a rental?

I've maintained that the players on their last year of contract asking for a trade and giving the team a list of preferred destinations serves the interest of the team trading them. Orlando does not need another Shaq (Mavs have the cap space next year so Dwight is likely gone if they don't get a deal done this year). Cavs and Raptors probably would've benefited with a trade ahead of times instead of late first round picks.

I think it depends on if they make the request public... and the stature of the player. If Dragic goes out and say he's not resigning, no one would even blink

But I've always thought that when a superstar announces he's not resigning, it could help the team. It gives the team enough time to listen to offers and make the best decision for their organization as opposed to losing the player to FA.

I think its the smart way of asking for a trade.
No huge PR disaster, casual fans will naively see the faux innocence in your request, talk will be quiet, it'll also help management relations as there will be no huge falling out, etc.

The problem with this is that it gives a handful of teams an unfair advantage. The destinations are usually preferred not because of basketball reasons.

A player giving the list of teams (not a single team, a list) allows the team trading him get the best deals. Instead of making everyone think they're getting a rental i.e. 29 crappy offers, this allow certain teams to know that they are going to get the guy for long term and be more willing to part with key pieces. Look at the haul N.O. and Denver got, you think Clippers and New York would give much as much as they did if they didn't get indication of locking up Paul and Melo long term?

Would you be willing to get what Cleveland and Toronto received for James and Bosh or what N.O. and Denver got for Paul and Melo? I also don't buy the unfair advantage argument, it's just the nature of the beast. Everyone wants to work for the top companies.
