Last year Rudy T. went with small lineup towards the end of the games. The lineup he used was Walt Williams at PF Shandon at SF Mobley at the two guard and Steve at the point. With that lineup the Rockets beat two playoff teams on the road (Portland and Seattle). Rudy T. has also played Cuttino Mobley at SF. Steve at two guard and Moochie at point. If it takes Walt Williams to play PF for us to win I say play him at PF. But now Maurice Taylor will want to play during the final minutes of the game. That means that Walt Williams has to sit on the bench during the final minutes of the game. Walt Williams was the reason why we were on a 5 game winning streak towards the end of the season. The only reason our 5 game winning streak was snapped because Walt Williams was suspended. Walt averaged about 18 points toward the end of the season. If Walt can continue putting those #'s we might have to go with a really small lineup during crunch time like:
    C-Maurice Taylor
    PF-Walt Williams
    SF-Shandon Anderson
    SG-Cuttino Mobley
    PG-Steve Francis
    What do you guys think?

I guess you failed to read his post or watch many games last season. Walt played PF for VERY long stretches of those games we won at the end of the season over the likes of Portland and Utah. That being said, I don't think we'll see much of that lineup this year. IF you play small like that, it is a MUST to have a shotblocking force at center to go along with the smaller forwards. (Hakeem or Cato) Crunch time you'll most likely have Steve at the 1, Cat at the 2, Shandon at the 3, Taylor at the 4, and Dream at the 5. Basically our starting lineup with Cat inserted for Walt. I don't think we'll be seeing much of Walt at PF this year.

"Taylor's rebounding average has increased every year. So I think he can average more than 6.5 rebounds next year. "

That is still not very impressive for a starting power forward.

    Rocketsauce,
Why did you say Walt Williams was the main reason why we lost 48 games?

    DJ,

    I completely agree...

IMO, if Rudy does the small lineup at crunch time to get his best scorers on the floor, Cato will sit. Mo will be the 5th player, and that is our best offensive team, no doubt. Note: often last year KT played with the fab four, even in the 4th quarter. So, I expect to see Mo and Fab Fo, often.

How about let's change the question slightly to ask: when can't Rudy go with the Mo Fo lineup.

Walt played the 4 because we had noone else. It was Bullard or a slumping KT, or Walt. So Rudy went with Walt. This year we have a quality 4 who can also shoot, so look for this to be our lineup at the end of the game:

    C Cato or Dream
    PF Taylor
    SF Anderson
    SG Mobley
    PG Francis

    What was the question?

If the question was along the lines of 'should we use a 4-guard set', then the answer is "yes, when we can make good on at least one mismatch'.

Will Rudy use that in the future?

    Yes.

The real question here is how fast and how long/hard can Mo run. Can he keep up with the run 'n gun offense? Speed & endurance...

If he fits in there, then I'd like to see what that 4-guard offense can do.

I agree with treeman. I also think Taylor can handle the fast pace. Should be fun.

The reason Rudy T. used Walt at the 4 because Walt can bring his man away from the rim which makes it easier for Cuttino Mobley or Steve Francis to drive. When the opponents double-team either of those two Walt Williams was wide open for the three pointer or Shandon was wide opened for an easy shot.

A reason we ran it a LOT last season is that we had a severe lack of big men due to injuries.

Of course that's not to say that Rudy won't go with it again! Defensively the Rockets play quite simply. They double down on the big man trying to take advantage of the mismatch and see if the outside shooter can beat them!
And down the other end the Rockets MUST have a mismatch there somewhere!!

Beautiful in it's simplicity, yet hard to figure out just how to beat.

We never had that lineup heypartner, at least at crunch time.

    I guarantee it

sure we did...but I never really said anything about crunch time, only the 4th quarter. In fact, I saw Bullard out there once with the Fab Fo in the 4th quarter. I wouldn't make something like that up. Miller rarely ever played the 4th quarter, Cato never played all of it, and Dream sat April. Who does that leave but Kenny Thomas.

NewGuy, you won't get any argument from me to never do that again. But, back to topic. Will we do it with Mo?

This lineup was common in the 4th quarter:

    KT
    Walt
    CM
    SA
    SF

Now we have Mo to put in there as the 5th player. I expect great things from the Mo Fab Fo. Mo will be able to abuse most all centers in the league, to the point they will have to go with a small line-up as well.

Guarding Walt through a bunch of double picks is not a pleasant thing for a PF to be doing. Few of them are used to running around like that, and it hurts their offense.

I am not making this up. That is exactly the reason Rudy gave for starting Bullard at the 4. He said, if I am going to have to go with Bullard because of injuries, I am going to feature him with Francis and run the opposing PF to death. If it doesn't work, you'll know within minutes, and you go traditional.

I feel we should and will practice DJs lineup with Walt and Mo and make it a scoring threat. I think DJs lineup can work in key moments of the game against any opponent, and a lot against many opponents.

Here's another way to look at it: the mere threat of the Mo Fab Fo lineup can get opposing coaches to spend precious practice time on something other than stopping Francis. And that is always a good thing.

I've definitely seen Bullard out there with the "Fab Fo". I remember it because I was thinking to myself, "ok, Bulls in, we're going to need to help him on D, now who's our big man backup.... oh my!!"

Not sure if I saw it in the 4th or in the 2nd quarter though....
