Let me first say that I love Jury duty, but I ABSOLUTELY cannot stand civil jury duty.

4 or 5 years ago, during jury selection, the plaintiff counsel asked me what I think the city should do about cracks on the street (his client tripped over a crack and was suing NYC for $50,000). My prompt and loud reply was (I dont remember exactly what I said, but this was close to it) "if someone can't walk around outside by themself without tripping and supposedly breaking a leg, maybe they need to think about staying home permanently. The city shouldn't have to do anything, the moron who can't take a step without tripping on a sidewalk should think about helping the rest of society out by not interacting with us."

the plaintiff counsel didn't ask me anything else after that, the city counsel had the biggest grin I have ever seen. I think she even winked at me after I said that.

The only two times I've been summoned, I was released because the trial was dropped.

Anyway, I know someone who got out of it by saying that he believed anyone in court was guilty and that trials were just a formality.

Both times I've been and actually made it past the assembly room I've found that the people who answer the questions (no matter how they answer them) don't get picked and the people who just sit there and daydream do.

I guess the lawyers just want to work with a clean slate?

That's funny because my only experience was the exact opposite. They picked the 12 that spoke up. Luckily I didn't say a word and wasn't picked. :)

That and I think the focus is mainly on the first few rows. The other 150 could probably leave, but that would make too much sense.

From my experience they usually pick the quiet ones. Say something outlandish and you usually will not get picked.
I used to toss the summons and never had a problem, Its not certified mail so how would they know you received it?
I went a couple of weeks ago, wasn't needed.

I was let off, nothing against that dude but the Stros had a 1 pm game and I was allready off work for the day

If you give strong opinionated statements that will usually get you off. Not always, though, if one side really likes you because of it. I give statements that are kinda iffy. Neither side knows how I stand so they aren't willing to chance it by picking me.

    English please? :)

I've never been summoned, but my shop teacher when I was in middle school was a jury for a murder trial. From what he described it was totally badass.. he couldn't wait to tell us what happened.

that's actually the best way to get onto a Jury. Most lawyers won't bother with you if you're very pro their view since they know the other side will reject you.

My last time the prosecution was asking anyone if they had a problem with a police officer as a witness (it was a battery case). I told them I've had run-ins with cops before who lied. I told them I would hope I could be objective about it but I couldn't guarantee that. They asked me to clarify if I could separate the two situations. I remphasized that I hope that I could but would not guarantee it.
That was enough to let me go by lunch time.

I'm always in the first few rows. I always get questions.

    What's up with that?
