The only comparable injury I can think of is the Theisman leg break. The video of this is just nasty... _____ Zednik describes neck slash horror Florida Panthers right winger Richard Zednik felt a stabbing pain in his neck and knew he had to get to the bench -- fast. Once there, he thought of his 4-year-old daughter, Ella. "I remember thinking, 'Am I going to see her grow up?"' Zednik said. He was cut in the neck during a game Feb. 10 at Buffalo, when teammate Olli Jokinen was upended and his skate swung up. Zednik's carotid artery was sliced but not completely severed, and the blade missed his jugular vein. "I felt like somebody stabbed me," Zednik said Thursday at his first news conference since the injury. "I knew exactly what happened and I knew exactly what I had to do. I was like, 'OK, this is it. I have to get up.' ... "When I got to the bench, I knew it was an artery, the way the blood was going. I don't want to think about it, but I was in pretty bad shape." After undergoing surgery, Zednik was discharged from Buffalo General Hospital a week ago and returned to South Florida a day later. He said he wants to play again as soon as possible. "I can't wait to get back and be with the guys," he said. The 32-year-old Zednik bears a long red scar down the right side of his scruffy neck, courtesy of the surgery. The scar intersects the 1 1/2 inch cut left by Jokinen's skate. A video of the accident posted online has been viewed more than a million times, but Zednik said he has seen the footage only once and won't watch it again. He said he was at first hesitant to view the video, but curiosity took over. "At first when I was in the Buffalo hospital, I was like, 'No, I don't want to watch.' I was like still kind of in shock. But then when I got back to Florida ... I was curious, exactly, how the skate came to the neck," he said. "I watched it once. That's enough." full article
It sure doesn't beat that, but the Willis McGahee knee injury was pretty horrifying. Knees aren't supposed to bend that way.
Wow, what makes that horrible is that you can't really tell what happens initially - he just takes the mask off and blood gushes out. I physically recoil every time I see the replay. Two others do the same thing to me: Duante Culpepper's knee injury and the infamous Shawn Livingston play where there was no physical contact with another player. It's a testimony to modern surgery that 2 of the 3 returned to their profession and Livingston probably will eventually.
Buffalo Sabres goalie Clint Mularchuk getting his jugular sliced open on a break-away, laying face down on the ice with a pool of blood slowly expanding from his neck.
Yeah, that's the vid at the other end of the link I posted. I didn't just embed it because, well... I figure most people don't particularly wanna see that.
i usually watch all these injury videos with no problem but i can't get myself to watch the hockey ones. guys getting sliced makes me squeamish i guess.
What do you tihnk about this? <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/kOuLugjHZQY&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/kOuLugjHZQY&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
What about the Kermit Washington hit on Rudy T? Another one I would put up among the worst is former Giants' pitcher breaking his arm in the middle of a pitch. Just remembered the pitcher's name, Dave Dravecky but can't find a video of it on Youtube.
I wouldn't think the Rudy T one would really count, since it wasn't really "in-game," it was an intentional fight/punch.
Here's the worse one I've seen from my sport and one that should be mandatory viewing for anyone starting Judo. <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/0XP9ETfGgA8&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/0XP9ETfGgA8&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
