This game had to rank up there with some of Houston Sports History's worst memories! Though this game did NOT eliminate the Astros and they still have a shot at this, being 1 strike away really stings. I really didn't expect them to beat Carpenter and the Cards for four straight games. But it was as close as it comes and that is why this tops the list of my all time Houston Sports Memory. What else are out there???
Yeah I voted for NLCS Game 5, but if we can somehow pull the series out, this loss will mean virtually nothing. However, if we lose the next two games, then Game 5 beats out Buffalo by a long shot.
well since I only remember two of them one VERY VIVIDLY and the other (stockon buzzer beater) a bit since I wasn't really watching basketball until 2000 and on. but it'd be game 6 easily, PENDING the outcome of this series (fingers crossed)
I agree. If we still beat the Cards and go on to the World Series then who cares if we lost this game or how we lost it.
This is true...the sting of this game won't be as devestating as those others if we still win this series. That is why I choose Bills-Oilers. BUT...this game WILL be #1 on my list IF they lose the series. They were ONE K from going to the fall classic. The Oilers still would have won on the AFC Champ game that season....
Forgot to mention I voted for Oilers-Bills. Luckily I didn't have to see the game. I was flying to Houston from Virginia and they announced the halftime score over the intercom. I remember getting off the plane and saying "I wonder what the score is" and having some woman tell me "don't worry, there's no way they could blow that lead." 2nd place would be UH-NC State game.
I probably feel this way because I am not a huge baseball fan, but I was over last nights loss in a few minutes. On the other hand, I didn't get over the Stockton shot until 2-3 weeks after the NBA Finals were over.
Only the older folks are going to remember the older bad memories. If the Astros don't win the LCS, last night will go down IMO as the worst sports memory in Houston history. It will top Oilers Bills which IMO is # 1 right now. Here's why? Oilers Bills was a divisional playoff game Oilers were on the road Had the Oilers won, I believe they would have gone on the road for the championship game (no guarantees). Astros Cards was a home game in the LCS 1 out/strike away from the first WS in team history Giving arguably the best hitter in baseball a gopher ball Do you remember what you were doing when Pujols shocked Houston? I bet you were celebrating.
exactly. IMHO, Roy wins game 6 or we watch (if we watch) the world series between Cards and Chi Sox. It seems odd, but I was at that game last night and it was an amazing game. I was at game 5 last year - Kent's walkoff...and last nights game was better. though we lost Pure elation for 1 2/3 and two strikes innnings. AMAZING! Go Roy! Go!
The Buffalo game. You could make a case that the Oilers franchise was done in Houston after that debacle. Or at least it was on life support until Joe Montana and the Chiefs put the final nail in the coffin the following year. Stockton's 3-pointer was a dagger, especially considering how big a lead the Rockets blew in that 4th quarter. But would we really have gone back into Utah and won Game 7? I'm doubtful. If(and that's a BIG IF) the Astros blow this series, then yes, Game 5 tops them all. But the Cards still have to beat Roy O and Clemens back-to-back. Any momentum they're feeling right now will be gone after the first inning tomorrow night.
My worst one was game five - Nolan Ryan in 1980, because it was my first one, and because I was in the stands for game four.
Last night's game was like getting hit in the back of the head with a crowbar. The Oilers/Bills game was like being tied up in a bathtub full of leeches...slow and painful...
its crazy but for that bills game i had this feeling like we were going to blow the game. kind of like the same feeling that the UT Iowa State game had last year. i never really felt like we were in control even though we were dominating them in score. after this astros loss i don't know how to feel. its like getting dumped by your girlfriend that you are madly in love with. total elation brought down with a baseball bat to the crotch. i still don't know why garner didn't order lidge to pitch around him. it happened so ******* fast thats what makes it so bad and that coupled with berkmans homerun...man this sucks. but i thought this team was going to choke away the wildcard and they didn't. so who knows how they feel inside the clubhouse, maybe they are just shaking it off. we'll find out tomorrow.
Oilers-Bills, no contest. I was watching the first half at an airport bar, then boarded my plain with that huge lead. Before we touched down, the pilot announced that the Bills had won in OT. Everyone on the plane was laughing -- we thought the dude was joking. When we landed, I found a TV and nearly lost my lunch.
1983 NCAA Champ (Cougars-Wolfpack) - That wasn't even supposed to be a game. Even Jim Valvano thought his team was doomed to be blown out. We were soaring high - through the season - through the tournament. Final game playing NC State - oh this is going to be goooood. Then the absolute unthinkable happens. We lose. And then of all things for us to lose on - a dunk in the final second. Oilers - it was a slow painful death but you had a 1/2 to see it materialize. Last nights game hurt. Hurt bad. But 1983 wasn't supposed to happen.
