I know there's been a few threads about best airlines but howabout the worsts? Here's some of my picks. Vanguard - I'm not sure if they fly anymore but they were one of those low costs airlines in the Valuejet (Airtrans), SWA mold. And moldy they were. Their planes litterally stank and fixtures inside often looked about to fall apart. On the plus side they were cheap cheap cheap. I flew from Minneapolis to SF and back for $100. Northworst - Unfortunately I'm held captive to them living in Minnesota since they have a stranglehold on the market. Really poor ontime performance for a major carrier. Bad at making connections and even though they are supposed to be Minnesota nice surprisingly surly staff. That's probably due to the all the labor problems. Really bad food and worse now that they make you buy it. Why anyone would want to pay for the crap they serve is beyond me.
Agreed...What the hell is up with the section seating...A, B, C to load a plane is ridiculous, especially if you are traveling with someone that is sitting next to you...You can't get on at the same time... I'm glad someone started this as I was going to do this or start a Mediocre Airlines thread...
Riding Airtran is pretty damn scary. I always feel relieved when I make it to my destination without the plane falling apart.
Definitely American Airlines!! I was on a AA flight from Dallas to Louisville in which I really thought that the gay male flight attendent was going to get the living crap beat out of him by a passenger. Basically, this man, his wife, and their kid was returning from a overseas family vacation (somewhere in Mexico I think) in which the wife broke her foot. For whatever reason, the wife was not treated in Mexico and she had a makeshift cast and hopping around on one foot. This family was seated in the first row of coach and I was a couple of rows behind them. Anyway, right after boarding the plane, the wife had to use the restroom and decided to hop to the 1st Class bathroom, which was 4 rows away as opposed to the Coach bathroom in the back of the plane. The male flight attendant saw this and went ape****. When the husband was defending his wife, the flight attendent accused the husband of being drunk (he had bought a drink in-flight) and threatened to call security. This was not a quiet episode at all. The flight attendant was very vocal and the family was visibly embarassed. He also told the husband that no more alcohol would be served to him. That entire flight, he treated that family like sh*t. All of us saw this and we all felt terrible for that family. His wife was crying out of embarassment during the flight. The last thing you want to do as a flight attendent is provoke a fairly built individual in-flight. It creates an unsafe situation for everyone. It was almost as if he wanted the passenger to hit him. From now on, as long as I have a choice, I will never fly AA again.
God help that flight attendant if my wife had been the one with the broken foot. I would have been pulling my wife's unbroken foot out of the flight attendants posterior. I don't think I could have resisted making a public annoucement on the plane of what was going on and that I thought the plane's respresentative for AA (said flight attendant) was a douchebag.
For me, it is easily Delta. The only time I have missed a connecting flight in my life was when I was flying back from Athens, Greece and I got stuck in New York (I was supposed to connect there and go on to Nashville). What made things so bad was that Delta had overbooked (what a surprise) the flight out of Athens and then they used some BS excuse in getting us boarded an hour after we were supposed to board. I knew we would be cutting it close to leave NY and go on to Nashville. Well after going through customs and getting my bags and then re-checking them, I had about 10 to 15 minutes before my plane left NY. I ran like a madman to the gate and got there, I thought, in enough time. Well, the surly Delta employees at that gate told me that the final boarding call had already been announced and that I was basically SOL. What really pissed me off, though, was that my freaking bags had already been put on the plane! I found out later that what Delta did was illegal or against the FAA and that they should have let me on the plane. But instead I had to spend the night in New York and take a flight out of LaGuardia (instead of JFK) before 6 the next morning. I was not happy to say the least. The day that Delta is officially out of the industry is a day I will be celebrating in earnest.
I was on AA from DC to Houston, and this attractive female attendent kept going into the cockpit area. Everytime she would come back out, she would be adjusting her dress, and making sure her face was in order. So basically when the flight attendent went in, one of the co-pilots would step out. Then it was the other pilot's turn. Jump to your own conclusions, I already made have mine. Made me wish I was a pilot on that flight.
Last Decmeber I flew back from JFK to Bangkok. I went out of my way to avoid a crappy american carrier (most asian carriers, with the exception of Air China and Air India, are MUCH nicer than the average US airline) for what is a monstrous flight experience (20+ hours of traveling while hung over). As a consequence I splurged for business class ticket on JAL (japan airlines) on the way back, figuring it was worth it. The first leg of it certainly was; I had an early AM flight out of BKK and was seated up in shining, new first class along with a bunch of snoozing businessmen. Cold Sapporo beer, decent sushi, noodles & otsumi mix (love that stuff), comfortable, big, first-class style cabin with huge seats on a new Airbus - plus a good selection of movies, etc. The first 6 hour leg to Tokyo was as decent as any first class flight I've taken anywhere. Then I changed in Tokyo - it turns out the second 13 hour half was JAL flight 66 - OPERATED by American Airlines. Bullsh-t, I paid the premium (and forewent the miles) for a good airline, and I'm stuck in AA business class (which is like coach on most nice airlines) needless to say it was a bummer. I hate AA and United.
Royal Jordanian. It was a long time ago, but a 4-prop job scared the hell out of me. More recently, some damn Mexican puddle jumper that flew us from Cozumel to Cancun. What a piece of crap! No AC, and the temp inside was about 120 degrees.
America West is by far the worst. I've flown enough for work that I've had bad experiences on just about every airline. I had a connecting flight coming home to Austin through Houston once on Continental. It was running a little tight. I sprinted from Terminal E to C. The flight, for some retared reason, pushed back early. I can't fly AA any longer because of their terrible prices. I can't stand Southwest employees. No, you're not a stand-up comdian. Put the damn mike down before I shove it down your a**. I can't stand the Atlanta airport, so I try to avoid Delta.
US AIR Do not ever fly US Scare. They have the worst on time arrival. A flight from Hartford to Philadelphia has a 20% chance of arriving on time - from their website.
American, hands down. First, it took them about 40 hours to get me from Paris to Houston. After this experience almost ten years ago I swore I would never fly them again. It wasn't just the delays/cancels, it was also the way they handled them. Then, three years ago I was supposed to fly from DC to Chicago for business. The catch was it had to be American because they have deals with government agencies. It was free, I had no choice, so I obviously agreed. For some reason they decided to cancel multiple flights to two or three destinations for about a four hour window (no other airline did, despite AA claiming it was weather). The best was that - as usual - they announced that there would be one ticket counter for all passengers of all the flights to get put onto another flight. I am quick so I luckily got a seat on the next available but it was still so long that the rental car place had closed by the time I got to O'Hare.
Aeroflot, a Russian airline...I flew them a few years back from Moscow to Malaysia. All I can say is absolutely horrible! The carpet on the planes moved, so the seats slid back and forth as well! On top of that, they did not serve ice on the plane. From what I gathered the ice thing was a Russian superstition, but I am not sure. The plane felt like it was 50 years old, it creaked and wobbled the entire way to Malaysia.
Air Koryo - the national airline of north korea, hands down is the worst in the world. From what I've read, you're lucky if they have enough jet fuel in their planes to make it to north korea and even if they do, the planes are so old that its a marvel that the meet the aerodynamic minimum to get lift considering they're ancient soviet aircraft.
