Props to you Mayor White, City Council, and Rice Professor Bob Stein!!!

Man dies trying to stop towing of his van

(02/01/05 - HOUSTON) — From its very first day, Houston's towing plan has been controversial and received a lot of criticism from drivers, tow truck drivers and even members of city council.

Now there's been a deadly accident and eyewitnesses believe the elderly man was killed because of the Safe Clear program.

At first police said the victim was a woman. They now say it was 77-year old Lawrence Kahng.

Investigators say his van ran out of gas so he pulled over to the inside shoulder of the east freeway Monday night. He apparently crossed the freeway to get gas and when he came back he saw a Safe Clear wrecker behind his van.

Eyewitnesses say that's when Kahng panicked and dashed back across the freeway.

"The car in the left lane hit him on the right side of his car. He just flew into my lane I hit the brakes I fishtailed, I felt something I'm sure I hit him. He flew into the right lane next to me," said eyewitness Richard Leal.

Kahng was hit by several cars and died at the scene. Police warn to avoid a tragedy like this one and to stay with your vehicle if it ever breaks down.

    It's the guy's own fault.

    1. He ran out of gas in the left lane.
    2. He could of waited on the tow to get him out of there and to safety.
    3. It's not worth dying for.

Why do you want to hold the Mayor responsible for the stupidity of an individual person?

Yeah, what we need is more government policies that kill people for making bad decisions. Hey, it thins the herd so that Bill White and Bob Stein can supposedly spend less time stuck in traffic with the peasants and their revolting cars.

    RMT,
You are defending this policy? It was so predictable that a tragedy like this would happen.

The War in Iraq being the most shining example of this, after all.

Oh yeah, sorry. It must be Halliburton's fault that the guy is dead.

Not defending it, Safe Clear "clearly" needs adjusting....but not blaming an individual's stupidity on others, either.

There is no possilbe way a 77 year old man would be hit crossing the East Freeway without the safe-clear towing policy. It would just never happen.

This isn't the first time a pedestrian was killed trying to cross a freeway. Why people even attempt it is beyond me. I have mixed feelings about the Safe Clear, but they are innocent of this one.

I agree with most everyone else in here. Sure the program has plenty of flaws, but it's this guys fault for deciding to run across the freeway.

    idiot . . a little harsh

How much would it cost him to get his car back?
What if he didn't have that much money? What happens to his car?
    What happens to him?

do you care if an elderly citizen loses his car for running out of gas?

his decision was not the best. . .. but emotion and fear
often overcome logic and good sense
