In this recession a lot of companies have started outsourcing call center jobs, data entry, online support, etc to home based agents. I have been blessed enough to be able to do tech support for a major wireless company for the past year or so from the comfort of my home. I'm just wondering, does anyone else work from home or have though about doing it?
I've thought about doing it since I already do freelance web design from home and my last job involved a lot of data entry. I figure I'd be a good candidate. Problem is, it seems difficult to know which job postings are legitimate. Well, other than the ones that advertise "make $2,000 a week working from home part-time!"
I was reading an article on yahoo yesterday about home-based jobs becoming more popular, however they said for every 57 job postings offering work from home, 56 of them are scams.
We do it at my company. It really depends on the team, but some people work 5 days a week from home, some 2 or 3, etc. I usually come into the office and maybe WFH once every couple of weeks. I only live about 10 mins from my office and I feel a lot more productive when I'm here. It is nice having the option though. I work in I.T. so really my job can be done from anywhere with an internet connection.
I just started school and can't decide which niche in IT to get into so that when I do start work I can setup a home office. Web Developing, App developing, Technical support. I can't start a thread so maybe I can piggy back on yours, thx.
I had a friend who left his job to go work as a help desk manager from home. He did it for about 8 months and went crazy because he said he got sick of being home and not really interacting with anyone face-to-face. He quit and went back to work "in a building with people". I think most people who work from home probably goof off most of the time. I'm not saying you do, but it always used to be a joke at places I've worked when someone "worked from home" - we'd always say "yeah, sure - he's 'working' from home".
Yeah, it would probably drive me crazy being at home all the time. There comes a point when the cabin fever begins to set in... Plus, coworker interaction gets me through the day.
Most people I know that work from home initially worked in the office, and then transitioned to the home gig. It was almost as if they had to "prove themselves" as a worthy self manager.
LOL, I do goof off a lot, if I don't have a call coming in I usually listen to music or browse the BBS. It's good to be able to make a good wage and work in your boxers. You're right about the going crazy part, you have to get out and do stuff, anything, and often. I do 4 days on and 3 days off so it's not too bad for me.
I've worked at home for a couple years. Its kind of neat at first but it gets old after awhile and the office parties are hella lonely.
I currently work from home, but have to travel about 30% of the other times.... I like it a bit, and dislike it a bit too... Much harder in summer with kids home... DD
LOL, anyways if anyone's interested www.liveops.com and www.westathome.com are both websites that are well known entry level companies for working legit at home. Haven't worked for either company BTW but know people that do.
I have worked from home in an IT job for over a year It is ok. The commute cannot be beaten Rocket River
Not really, I didn't even post the company I work for, just trying to help people out man. It's a bad economy and even if it's a low paying at home jobs it's still a top priority for some people without work.
