So from what it seems, morey signs players he wants, and hands them off to Mchale to coach and put into the system.

Not sure if this is a good working dynamic. According to Mchale, he didn't know about the TRob trade until 6:30pm game day. and after the trade, reporters asked Mchale why he was on-board with the trade and he said "who says I'm on board??".

I obviously have no idea how they work together but if Morey just hands players to Mchale and have Mchale integrate them into the system, couple of things could happen:

    - Mchale utilizes the player the way Morey envisions, and everyone is happy that the player potential is being maximized.
    - Mchale sees the player attributes differently then Morey and there's a conflict in view about the player and how to use him.

I wonder how much input morey has into how a players is to be utilized - he's not the coach and have never been a coach. he's a basketball fan and junky and most likely look at player potential and contribution much differently then mchale does. what if a players advance stats doesn't compute with mchale'e eye test? in that case you might have a coach reluctantly playing a player that he doesn't want to have on the court.

i don't know about you guys, but i'd rather have my coach be very involved in the player acquisition process so both coach and gm are totally on-board with what they're lacking and how they want to utilize a player. doesn't that just seem... logical?

Well, we haven't reached a point yet where McHale says "I don't know what am I supposed to do with him."

Easy trivia: What former coach said that and about what player?

McHale is a puppet. Only a puppet would have played Busty Thomas Jefferson just cuz Morey traded for his ass.

    Correct!

I don't think we're at the Adelman/Morey stage yet. Who's to say we even(ever?) get there?

first don't get me wrong. i am saying we are going to fire him. no matter who he is, he won't our head coach forever.

then, we can bet on which one comes first, he leaves rox or he says "I don't know what am I supposed to do with him."

Guess what, McHale didn't know what he was supposed to do with Thomas the Tank Engine. He should have sat the Tank Engine on the bench and sent him to RGV.

McHale didn't do so hot when he was a GM OR coach for the Wolves so maybe since his way 'didn't work' in the past, he's got to do it Dork Elvis' way. I dunno

Thomas the Tank should still be in Sacramento. :p I digress.

Maybe he should be in RGV but unfortunately we can't have all 20 PFs down there at once.

You're clearly against the trade we made for T-Rob, but I really fail to see why. What exactly were Morris and Patterson doing for us? They are both role players at best.....neither has the potential that Robinson gives us, both on the court, and in a trade scenario.

It seems logical, but the reality is there are a lot of reasons why the coach and the GM have to be separate. First of al the coach has different goals than the GM. The coach wants to win NOW, so he can keep his job, because as we all know coaches are the ones who get fired first. So naturally, the coach would value stuff that helps him win now rather than things which would help him win more later on. For example, very few coaches would be on board with trading Shane Battier for Hasheem Thabeet and a 1st rounder 2-3 years from now. Although it was the correct move for a rebuilding franchise, coaches would hate this because you'd be exchanging one of the smartest role players ever for a 90% bust gamble.

Another reason is the emotional aspect. The coach is the guy players have to be willing to run through brick walls for, and it's hard to do that when he's also the guy who drafted your replacement, traded away your best buddy or had a hand in giving you a below market salary. The coach has to be "one of the guys", and in order to do that IMHO he has to have no hand in GM decisions.

Finally, a 3rd reason is some coaches are just dumb GMs. Some guys like Pops can balance it out, however good coaches like JVG kept on getting washed up NY guys and Larry Brown kept on trading for one guy one week and then ignoring him the next. There's also the issue of culpability, at least there's a division of labor in Morey's case so it's easy to see when it's his fault or when it's Mchale's fault. In cases with Pops and Buford, it's harder to tell who's at fault when they screw up.

The real question is how off is if this goes on for a few days how bad does is Terrance Jones that he still couldn't crack the rotation as a back up PF?

You're new here, but it's an old topic, really.

Mchale is seen as more of a temp coach, a babysitter even. Morey hasn't exactly said it, but it's what most of us have come to believe based on what goes on. We needed a guy who could develop and nurture younger guys. In the end, when we're truly contenders, we'll need that Adelman type again.

Morey has to field a contender. At this point, i think he knows enough to know how to get those major pieces. I don't think the coach's input is that important at this stage. Remember that Mchale is only looking to win now, while Morey has to plan for the future and remain competitive. They're not going to agree 100 %, that's a given. McHale is going to ask for the ready now guys, while Morey wants big potential guys. Once we secure another star or two, then the ready-now guys become more of a priority.

If the Rockets coaching staff and the GM had to make decisions 100% in sync with each other this team would probably have a lineup this season that looked like this -

    PG: Lowry
    SG: Lee
    SF: Budinger
    PF: Scola
    C: Camby

-If the coach & GM work that closely they make their decisions based on winning games today, and this season because that's what a coach is worried about. NO WAY the coach allows the GM to trade away their starting PG(playing at an all-star level) for a lotto pick without knowing for sure that this pick would be used to get a superstar.

Also, Camby and Lee are players that would have been re-signed, Scola would never have been amnestied, and the cap space their contract would take up would keep the Rockets from making ANY free agent/mega trades this Summer. Also, the Lee S&T pick was a good asset to sweeten the Harden trade.

So No.... I do not think a team like this should ever have a situation where the coach can overrule the GM's moves. Should McHale have more input in surrounding pieces one they have established themselves as a championship contender??.... Sure, but they aren't there yet, and McHale or any coach wouldn't be able to pull the trigor on deals they needed to make to truly get this team to a contention.
