Anybody know of any free ones that are any good?

My copy of Office 2000 is flaking out on me, and I'm not going to shell out the money for XP. I think I have a virus, but oh well.

    Thanks.

It's easier to find a free virus checker than it is to find a free, decent word processor.

    Why not reinstall Office?

Don't know of any good free ones. Aren't you a student? If so, you can get the student version of Office XP (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel) for $129.00 at Best Buy (among others). It is also able to be installed on 3 separate 'home' computers. $129 is still a lot of money compared to free, however.

How exactly is it flaking out?

Most ppl use Ad-aware. Most ppl like it. Might as well give it a shot. If you don't like it, uninstall if.

I'm not sure Ad-aware is really a virus checker, is it? I thought it was only spyware/tracking software.

    No.

There aren't too many good "free" virus scanners. I'd pay the money to get something like Eset or Norton. But if you really want free, and assuming you're on the Windows platform, try something like Grisoft's AVG

I dunno... I personally don't have/use it, but it supposedly finds all sorts of suspicious files, quarantines, and takes care of them.... I dont know much else about it.

For spyware, I like Spybot Search and Destroy. There is a decent freeware anti-virus, but I can't remember the name -- will check in a bit.

bobrek.. are you legally allowed to install the student edition on mulitiple computers? I just bought a laptop and was curious if it was legal to install it on the laptop as well. wasnt even sure if it was able to be installed more than once or not I had heard some of the new software is made so it can't be installed more than once but I don't know how accurate that is..

According to what is on the box up to 3 people in a qualifying household can install the product. Also, there have been MS licenses in the past which allow you to install the same product on both a desktop and laptop. Of course, that was much easier to do before MS started having you have to activate the product.
