Apple Computer to Open Retail Store CUPERTINO, Calif. (AP) - Apple Computer Inc. will open its first retail store May 19 in McLean, Va. - the first of what is expected to become a chain of Apple outlets. Until its media invitation Monday announcing the grand opening, the Cupertino-based personal computer maker had refused to confirm reports that it planned to open its own stores. News reports have instead relied on city sources, including Apple's pending application to build a store in downtown Palo Alto. Apple currently relies mainly on resellers, large electronics retailers and its own Web site to sell its products. The McLean store will be in Tysons Corner, one of two large business centers in a city that has been attracting more high-tech businesses. Tysons Corner has the highest concentration of high-technology employers of any other location in Fairfax County, according to the city's Web site. The city, part of Washington D.C.'s greater metropolitan area, is also home to several federal government agencies, including the Central Intelligence Agency. Chris Le Tocq, an analyst at Guernsey Research, thinks Apple may be going after the government market, in part by getting more federal employees to use their products. Unlike Gateway Inc., which has about 300 stores throughout the United States, Le Tocq said "Apple is being more targeted here, going for areas where it feels it is not getting its fair shake." ------------------ Ceo of the Walt Williams and Lisa Malosky fan club. atheistalliance.org
actually if they'd done this 10 years ago maybe they would have had a bigger share of the market. Most dorks that sell computers are pc gamers... and they aren't going to rant and rave about apple. ------------------ women love me, fish fear me.
This is very cool. I love the Mac. I wish one of these stores was coming my way. I think the G4 is a great computer. ------------------ "I may be mistaken, but I'm never wrong" -Barkley
You beat me to it. Welcome to the 21st century Apple. That being said, I'm tempted to go check out some of these Apples and find out why people love them. It isn't the software selection. It isn't how quickly software is available. So what gives?! ------------------ NBA Draft Lottery is May 20th. Start praying now.

I'm a life-long PC user with NO particular skills on the unit except SURVIVAL. I use it for business. Contact management. Email and Snail Mail communication and web-surfing. Would a MAC make my life easier? Someday. Or would the learning curve defeat the purpose of trying to make my life easier? ------------------ Time is a great teacher-- only problem is it kills all its pupils.
Have you guys seen the new IBooks, probably the best deal around a base system starting at $1300. The titanium is still nicer but if you are on a budget the IBooks rock. Yep, the new iBooks are certainly a setp-up from the last models. At the very least, they are far less girly looking. ------------------ Houston Sports Board Film Dallas.com AntiBud.com
I know. I have the graphite DV model that came out just before the new one. It rocks! My main computer is an iMac Special Edition DV (500mhz with 256MB ram). By the way, I'm selling a purple iMac 333 if anyone is interested. It has OS X on it. ------------------ So, I took the million dollars and bought a steam shovel...
Originally posted by Dr of Dunk: I read similar comments by you about Macs, and I've often wondered why no one else has responded. Where do you get the idea that software is limited for Macs? The only software market dominated by Wintel is the gaming market, and that is getting smaller and smaller every day. With the exception of an obsure game or two, I have never had trouble finding software for Macintosh, and I have been using them since 1992. So where does your information come from? Have you ever done any research about the Mac or software development for it? ------------------ "I have no regrets except that I wasn't up to keep Randy from getting on that plane." --Ozzy Osbourne on guitarist Randy Rhodes
Me, too! By going to the local computer store. I see 1 or 2 rows of Mac software or they're all buried in a corner somewhere. CompUSA comes to mind. Well, after decades you'd hope so, and if you can tell me that the choices in other software are there, I'll be more than happy to agree with you. I want selection. I can find software for Linux, too. I'd rather have a selection rather than 1-3 choices. My information comes from nowhere because I truly don't know the answer. I asked a simple question hoping to get that answer. You, however, in response, got your panties in a wad. And FYI, my first PC was an Apple //e, I used Macs in college, and I own Apple stock. I was using Macs back from '88-'92, and there definitely was not equivalent selection of software back then. As stated above, I still don't see anywhere near an equivalent choice of software within a segment except maybe in graphics and desktop publishing. And no, I don't need to develop for a Mac to know that. Thanks for the input, though. ------------------ NBA Draft Lottery is May 20th. Start praying now.

**I'm incredibly tired, so forgive me if I ramble or some such thing** Dr of Dunk: My intention was not to flame you, so no my panties are not in a wad. Your comment about Mac software is the tired claim that Mac users have heard for years (of course, Mac users have many complaints about Windows, some are justified, some are not). I had forgotten that you are a developer, so I'm sure you have a lot more knowledge of more industry applications than the average user. What do you want to know about Mac software? I'm an every day user and I can tell you that all of the major titles I can think of are available for Macs. I know that Windows has more, but for the everyday user like myself, I have no trouble getting the software for every day stuff. www.maczone.com www.macaddict.com www.macworld.com ...and a billion other .coms can tell you all kinds of stuff about the state of the Mac and software for it. I'm not a gamer at all, but of the more popular titles like Quake, Diablo I & II, etc. are all available on the Mac, as well as many Microsoft titles including Office, which includes many Mac-first, Mac-only features. Not to mention (which you did) the graphics niche that Apple still rules: anything by Adobe, Macomedia, Quark, etc. Also things like Quicktime, iMovie, iTunes, iDVD are all great Apple products. I think CAD can also be run on a Mac. As for OSs, there is all of the different Mac OSs, plus Windows 9x, WindowsME, and whatever the other ones are that run suprisingly well through emulation. So when you say "Where is the Mac software?," I have to ask what software are you talking about that causes you to ask this question? ------------------ "I have no regrets except that I wasn't up to keep Randy from getting on that plane." --Ozzy Osbourne on guitarist Randy Rhodes [This message has been edited by Lynus302 (edited May 09, 2001).]
dammit......DEANBCURTIS, Jeff.....guys help me out here! ------------------ "I have no regrets except that I wasn't up to keep Randy from getting on that plane." --Ozzy Osbourne on guitarist Randy Rhodes
Lynus302, Thanks for the response. As I stated in Jeff's thread, I'm looking to purchase a G4 (I have no clue as to which one yet). The more I think about it, software selection probably isn't that important to me at this stage of the game since I'll always have my PC around. I simply asked that question to see what drove people to purchase it. For me, with regards to applications, I can get by with something that does A, something that does B, etc. if I purchase a Mac. I probably don't need the selection as I'm just buying one to learn more about the platform. One thing I hate is the pricing... ugh. I feel like I'm selling body parts to buy some of this stuff. What's missing more than software or hardware for Apple is competition. That would bring prices down. I was somewhat happy with the prices I saw on G4's until I noticed they didn't include the monitor. Haha. Oh well. ------------------ NBA Draft Lottery is May 20th. Start praying now. http://www.sitelink.net/ That is one of the best sites for Mac Links on the web. The software argument is valid. There are plenty of apps I simply cannot use if I have a Mac. The question becomes, "Do you really need them?" If you are developing for a Windows-based server (Cold Fusion and ASP come immediately to mind), you have no choice. Also, it is tough to find things like point of sale software and integrated database software. Now, if you are into graphic design, music, page layout or some other creative development, Mac is your machine (with the notable exception of Dreamweaver and Flash, perhaps although that works well on both). Mac is still the industry standard in the newspaper/magazine, graphic arts and music industries. If you only want general industry-wide software for word processing, graphics, etc. like Photoshop, Microsoft Word and the like, either machine will work fine. By the way, if you MUST have Windows software and are in the Mac environment, there are plenty of Soft Windows applications that will allow you to boot up a Win 98-alike and run a wide range of Windows-only applications. ------------------ So, I took the million dollars and bought a steam shovel...
