Here's a great suggestion: Can I donate my used cell phone to SafePlace? Yes, cell phones can benefit the people served by SafePlace. We accept phone donations, however our agency does not have the technology required to prepare cell phones for use. Therefore we have partnered with other agencies for purposes of preparing the cell phones for client use. For more details on donating a phone, please call 356-1676 or email donations@austin-safeplace.org. SafePlace "works to end domestic and sexual violence through crisis intervention, prevention, education, long-term support and advocacy".
Great idea. I will keep it in mind the next time I swap out cellphones. I did it about 6 months ago and just gave my old one back to Sprint.
I just switched to Verizon and the store had a place where you could drop your old cell phone off and it would go to a charity like this.
if your cellphone has value, sell it and donate the money if its that big of a deal. don't donate a good phone when they can use older phones just as well.
You won't get any money for a used cell phone. Poor college student? Bah. There are more important causes out there. And I tended to think people were more giving than they used to be...guess not...
Let me clarify; I thought my point was clear. If you are wondering what to do with your old cellphone, by which I meant something that had very little if any market value (my Nokia 6160 is maybe worth $25), and if you would be interested in seeing someone who can really use it get some use out of it, SafePlace accepts used cellphones. My understanding is that SafePlace gives them to battered women who can use them to call 911 if they're in some kind of trouble. Can you sell your old cellphone and give the $$$ to charity? Sure. You can cut all your hair off and sell it to a wig maker, too. That's not the point. I have an old cellphone that I don't need, don't want to hassle with selling, and would have trouble finding a buyer for anyway (because it's so outdated). When the idea of donating it to a charity that would repurpose it for someone who could really use it was suggested, I thought it was a good idea and decided to share it w/the BBS since I'd never heard of anything like it. Honestly, I don't see the need to argue the issue-- it's just a suggestion and in my case a damned good one. If you're not interested, that's great too, but I don't see why you'd try to talk someone out of a charitable donation. It hurts my feelings. I think I'll go Goth.
