    ----FEBRUARY 13----
----US ATTACKS CANADA's 'RUNNING UP THE SCORE'----
"I'm upset that Canada has been running up the score, especially against the host nation," Ruggiero told SI.com on Monday. "There was no need for that. They're trying to pad their stats ... Canada is running up the score for whatever reasons -- personal, short-term."

Ruggiero assailed the Americans' archrival because she realizes women's hockey, in its third Olympics, is still relatively fragile because of the competitive imbalance. The Americans and Canadians have yet to lose to anyone except each other in Olympic play, hardly surprising considering that neither nation has lost to any of the second-tier countries in the history of the sport. Canada is 120-0-2 while the U.S. is 59-0-2 in international matches that didn't involve the other women's hockey superpower.

"It does hurt our sport when one team is so dominant," said the 26-year-old Ruggiero, whose team scored six and five goals, respectively, in opening shutouts of Switzerland and Germany. "Beating Russia 12-0 after the Italy game, that doesn't help. If Italy had any hopes, or if their federation was thinking of helping women's hockey, well, this probably shattered them after the first game. They'll say, 'How are we ever going to beat those guys?' If you don't have a shot of ever getting there, why not invest in another sport?"

"I would love to see Finland or Sweden make a final," she said. "Not when I'm playing, but eventually. We need that."

    ----CANADA'S RESPONSE----

After a third straight blowout victory in the Olympic women's hockey tournament, Canada refused to apologize for being really good.

Gillian Apps scored three goals, Danielle Goyette added two more and the Canadians finished an overwhelming run through the preliminary round, routing Sweden 8-1 on Tuesday.

"This is the Olympics, and it matters," Wickenheiser said. "If there was no goal differential that mattered, we would probably dump the puck in and sit back. But it makes a mockery at the same time when you just sit back. Fans don't want to see that. ..."
    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/olympics/2006/02/14/canada.sweden.ap/index.html

On Sunday, Canadian coach Melody Davidson said she did not like such lopsided scores.

But tiebreakers are decided first by the deadlocked teams' record against each other and then by goal differential. Davidson said the Canadians can't afford to leave anything to chance or risk losing the right of last line change as the home team in a playoff game if goal differential was factored in.

She did suggest an alternative to goal differential or even changing the formula for a tiebreaker should be considered in the women's game in order to help avoid blowouts.

''It's just growing pains we have to go through as a sport to get better and for gap to close in the playing field,'' she told reporters. ''That's the price we have to pay as a new sport.''

    ----FEBRUARY 17----
TURIN, Italy (AP) -- The U.S. women's hockey team made history Friday night -- the wrong kind.

For the first time since international competition in women's hockey began in 1990, the U.S. and Canada won't meet in the championship match -- and it's largely because of Kim Martin.

Martin made 37 saves and stopped all four American attempts in a shootout, while Maria Rooth had two regulation scores and the clinching shootout goal in Sweden's 3-2 victory in the semifinals.

But the Americans barely held off Finland on Tuesday before losing to Sweden, which lost 8-1 to Canada in the preliminary round and appeared weaker than the Finns.

that's what you get for being b****es USA (women's hockey team, not all you friendly americans  )

looks like other teams now know that they can beat you guys...looks like they made the finals. sucks to be you. cocky ass b**** runnin her mouth and then losing. guess you SHOULD HAVE run the score, eh? or maybe you were just pissed that Canada was able to run the score when you could barely get by the Fins and struggled throughout the tournament (compared to how you were supposed to do).

normally I'd be pissed about 3814 insulting the greatest nation on the face of the earth.

    then I realize, canada isn't a real country :)

i really don't mean to be directing ANY of these insults to america...but i couldn't fit "TEAM" in front of "USA" in the title, too many characters.

all of this is directed at the womens TEAM USA...not at americans in general, just to clarify...i don't gots anything against my brothers and sisters (other than the hockey team) to the south.

Womens hockey is a sport? Where's that thread about getting rid of Olympic sports. I think Drag Racing should replace women's hockey.

Stupidity is contagious for some of our countrywomen :(

One of our women snowboarders was way ahead leading in a race, she decides to go off a jump and tweak her board and goes too far. She lands on her face, gets passed by a Swiss snowboarder, and settles for silver.

i really don't understand the hate for hockey that happens everytime there is an article relating to the sport on this board.

i personally don't care for baseball, but i don't enter every baseball thread and say "baseball sucks!"

this is probably something that i will never understand - why hate it...why not just ignore it or be indifferent about it.

Why not just be indifferent on the responses? I usually scan over the non-informative ones.

The same thing happens in every soccer thread also. Generally if a I see a thread about something I don't like I'll just ignore it instead of making sure I tell everybody about how much said subject sucks.

It's a pretty big story actually. First loss by US in world cup or olympics since 1990, other than to Canada.

The debate before the game had been whether the sport should even be in the olympics given the presumption that there were only two teams that could play at the top level.
