As part of which ideology/religion were these killings carried out? None.

Did these people kill/rape because they believed it was their duty as Americans to do so? No.

Is there something in the US constitution that could be construed/understood in a way that would justify these actions? No.

Carl Herrera, you obviously do not understand the difference between ideologically/religiously-motivated killings and transgressions that occur all over the world and that are carried out because of what people perceive the religion/ideology tells them to do and killings that happen to be carried out by people who happen to share the same nationality.

You shall be forgiven, though, as your posting history indicates that you clearly lack the intellectual capacity to make this distinction.

The intent of the thread starter was directed ad hominem, in case you have not noticed.

I'm sure this has been asked before, but just out of curiosity, do you have any muslim friends/acquaintances that you have respect for?

Truthfully you seem like an intelligent person, but you just seem like you haven't had an opportunity to venture out of your closed view of the world except through these articles you post. I'm probably not going to get anywhere with this line of reasoning, but you have to realize that these people's actions in any of the articles you've posted are in no way supported by the majority of muslims globally. Stereotyping a race or religion due to some bad apples, generally in third world countries, who are taking things out of context to serve their purpose isn't going to sway anyone's opinion on the religion of Islam itself. It sounds like you're very strong in your convictions. Is there something that initially brought you to feel this way?

Some people would say that those three facts make those crimes just as bad if not worse than crimes committed because of an ideology.

Let's say a terrorist kills a civilian, and he does so in the name of Allah. If an American kills a civilian because he's bored or horny... does that make him any better?

No, it does not make the person any better, a murder is a murder. In fact, one might argue that if someone is deluded into thinking that he is commanded to do so because a higher power tells them it is the right thing to do, the person is "better".

But my point is not whether the person is better, but that you might have less murders/crimes/oppression/intolerance without an ideology/religion that people use to justify or rationalize their acts. Kind of like what John Lennon said in "Imagine"...I never understood that line, because I only viewed religion as something positive...now I know what he meant.

Yes, I do, a few, not many, but I never lived in a country where there would be a whole lot of Muslims, otherwise it would be more, I'm sure.

I understand that the majority of Muslims globally are just good and normal people who want to lead a good life.

But would you consider the outcome of this poll worrying?

    Recent Poll in Egypt:

    Traditional Muslim practices

54%: Believe men and women should be segregated in the workplace

82%: Believe adulterers should be stoned

84%: Believe apostates from Islam should face the death penalty

77%: Believe thieves should be flogged or have their hands cut off

    http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news...racy-and-stoning-for-adultery/article1892414/

Seems like the majority of Muslims in Egypt support things I and probably the majority of the Western world would consider unacceptable. When I read some of the posts on this board, I can also only shake my head (e.g. the intolerance and outrage because of some cartoons, etc. etc.).

I would agree with you if it was just about some bad apples, but the question is how much of this is rooted within the ideology/religion itself.

A mix of personal experiences and observing what is going on in the world, but nothing traumatic in terms of a personal experience, if that's what you are asking.

I do not think that phrase means what you think it means.

Not even close. The other thread was about the killing of a 14 yr old rape victim, because it was the law.

The US government does not use Sharia law or any law that would merit the death penalty to a 14 yr old girl for being raped by her uncle. In the US, the uncle would have been arrested for rape.

At first glance after reading the post right above this, I still had the word "rape" in my mind so I read your comment as:
