http://twitter.com/WojYahooNBA/statuses/17225838781 those draft picks are looking better and better by the day
If this happens New York fans will feel like ****. Everyone figured they would miss out on LeBron but I thought they would at least get Johnson and Boozer.
I forget the details of the protection on the picks and which one gets deferred but isn't there a case where we could lose one of the picks if the Knicks are too bad?
But one of those gets deferred I believe. If the Knicks land a Top 5 pick in that second year, doesn't our pick get bumped back a year or something? If they land the top pick next year, we simply lose it, right?
Just read this too... How beautiful would it be to see the 2010-11 Knicks led by a resigned David Lee =) Now let's just see it come to fruition, and then we can start fielding offers for those picks!
Yep your right What is the protection on the draft picks that the Rockets receive? The 2012 pick is Top 5 protected. The 2011 right to flip picks is Top 1 protected. What happens if the 2011 pick ends up being the #1 pick? Put simply, the Rockets get nothing. This is simply a right to swap in 2011 alone. It does not carry over into future years. So if the Knicks win the lottery in 2011, they win big. No future obligation on this pick is carried over. What happens if the 2012 pick ends up in the Top 5? The Knicks will keep that pick if it ends up being in the Top 5. The obligation rolls forward for four years and is top 5 protected in each of those years. If the Knicks pick 1-5 for four straight years, unlikely as it is, the obligation to Houston becomes two second round picks. Do these picks have to the the Knicks own picks or can they acquire another pick from another team to fulfill this obligation? These are the Knicks picks that the Rockets can/will receive. Period. For example, the Knicks can not trade for a late first rounder from Portland and then send it to Houston to meet these obligations.
Really? Dang I hadn't even thought about that... What are the odds? Rockets for the #2 pick next year...
This should answer any questions about the pick protection. http://www.clutchfans.net/news/1552/terms_of_rockets-knicks_draft_picks_swap/ The Knicks will get SOMEONE with that much cap space, but if they swing and miss on all the top free agents, the Rockets are loving it.
And don't forget Mcgrady is also in the free agent market. They have a lot better shot at this superstar.
I think it's something like that. Makes you wonder if Morey will try to use those picks for trade purposes to maximize their value and eliminate the risk. Worst case, we keep them and hope for the most optimal positioning and talent in the draft.
Don't worry guys, you're forgetting the Warriors and Wolves still exist. Not to mention the Nets had 12 wins and STILL didn't get the #1 pick.
wow, that's like the first time someone has laid it out and I understood all of it. totalllly get it now, thanks.
Thanks, I was off on some details. Favorited for future reference. So, there is some inherent risk even though it's minimal. I imagine Morey will be more than willing to flip them if the right deal comes along but in a worst case, the odds are good that we get some high picks.
