Sources involved with the discussions say that the Wizards are talking to the Los Angeles Lakers about a sign-and-trade deal in which forward Kwame Brown, the top pick in the 2001 NBA draft, would go to the Lakers in exchange for swingman Caron Butler.

The Wizards have other options on the table that could bring them a much-needed big man in return for Brown, but Butler would make a lot of sense.

Butler has been available during most of his yearlong stay in Los Angeles. If the Lakers move him and, as expected, release forward Brian Grant in order to save money under the luxury tax, they would have precious little to show for their blockbuster trade of Shaquille O'Neal to Miami.

The deal makes sense. Butler would fill the swingman role for the Wizards and at a MUCH reduced cost from Hughes. They keep their payroll under control.

For the Lakers, Butler is a nice tradable asset but they need to gamble a bit. Getting Brown is a gamble with a high reward. It would give them a 4/5 that is serviceable and could be a 20/10 guy if he develops. Also allows Bynum to develop at a slower pace.

If Brown goes to the Lakers, I hope he's incorrigible for them. I hope he's a major disappointment and that he weighs them down.

i can't believe the lakers couldn't get more for Caron Butler....if they trade him to the wiz for Kwame Brown...they really do have nothing to show for the shaq trade. then it's basically shaq for odom. I can't believe this is true.

Whether this trade goes down (Kwame and BYC implications?), Caron Butler won't be a Laker too much longer. He's the most expendable trade asset. How many small forwards and shooting guards can you put on one team?

if they're running phil's offense again, i really think they have to trade caron now. they'd be much better off with luke and his passing ability in the lineup

IIRC, one of the items of the new CBA was to relax the base year salary rules in order to free up player movement.

Here's hoping that Brown + Kobe is as good a relationship as Brown + MJ.

Okay move for the Wiz, though it doesn't come close to filling the hole.

I'm crossing my fingers that Grant gets waived and we pick him up on the cheap. He'd be wonderful in as a 15 min/game guy.

I thought Caron was acutally a good player. This is a bad trade for the Lakers they dont need another headcase.

Caron is a solid player but he will never be much better than he is, and he just doesn't fit in their current roster.
I think this is a average trade for LA that has the potiential to be great. The spotlight might be too big for Kwame in LA, but maybe he can mature enough, and pull it together. Like Deuce said, he could devolp into a 20 and 10 player. He would would also ease Bynum's transition. If I'm LA, I take the risk. If Kwame devolps into the player he can be, Odom and Kwame isn't too bad for Shaq.

So Shaq for busty Kwame and injurey-prone Lamar. Awahahahaha. Not saying Shaq is what he was 5years ago, but still...

So, Kwame 'settles' for a measely 4 or so mil in an SnT -- or do Lakes also 'throw in' Cook to get KB over the MLE range? (Butler is @3.3mil for next season + 25% / or -25% from KB's signing, still -- low 4's.)

Don't forget a cap killing Brian Grant. Yup, that deal keeps looking better and better.

Caron showed great potential when Kobe was injured. He's not a starter but Kwame has poisoned his stock to the point where it's a fair trade.

If the deal happens, I'll bet the Zen Master makes Kwame the whipping boy like he did with Horry and Horace Grant

Brown will have a hard time on Kobe's team and will fail. I hope they make this trade because Butler is one of the few guys who can play well with Kobe. This will be a big step backwards for the Lakers. Dumb trade for them. I like it. :)

Evan, I am with you there. Grant would be a nice pickup with the LLE.

While I think it is a good deal for both teams, I think for Kwame's long term success, LA probably isnt a good location for him. Kwame would be much better off out of the lime light where so much wasnt expected of him. Some place where he isnt one of the top options. In a way that is the case in LA but the LA media will be brutal on Kwame nevertheless.
Kwame needed to go someplace like Atlanta where he could start over.

Or the other team in Los Angeles. Nobody in Los Angeles would even notice he's there if he was a Clipper.

Yes, Shaq, at his age, for a potiential reached Kwame and Lamar Odom is not a terrible trade. I said a potiential reached Kwame, he was drafted #1 overall because of his potiential. Might not look like the best trade now to you, but in 3 years when Shaq is out of the league, Kwame is in is prime and Odom is still solid, who knows?
And Brian Grant will most likley be waived with the new rule so I wasn't counting him in the trade.

Wait till the Heat are paying a broken down 38 year old Shaq $30 million per season.
