Wizards' Brown ticketed for driving 120 mph http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news/ap/20020429/ap-wizards-brown.html April 29, 2002 DUBLIN, Ga. (AP) -- Kwame Brown, the NBA's No. 1 overall draft pick in 2001 by the Washington Wizards, was arrested for driving 120 mph. Brown, a 20-year-old forward and the first high school player taken with the first pick of the NBA draft, was charged Saturday with speeding in a 60 mph construction zone. Sgt. Kirk Hartwell of the Laurens County Sheriff's Department said Brown was racing a motorcycle, but pulled over without any trouble. Hartwell said Brown will automatically lose his license because of his age and the excessive speed. Brown was taken to the sheriff's office, where he paid a cash bond of $1,200. Brown signed a three-year $11.9 million contract with the Wizards. Millions of dollars and he's going to have to hitch a ride to and from the games...
Kwame, Kwame, Kwame *shaking head in shame* He was actually riding in his car, but was racing someone who was in a motorcycle.
Brown has shown this year, that he's not the sharpest tool in the shed. I really have my doubts about this guy doing much of anything in the NBA. His maturity level is on par with mine from 8th grade. Kid doesn't know how to go grocery shopping or doing his laundry, but he's out driving 120?
I guess Kidrock is right, but its really surprising to me. You expect to see a high school kid having a rough time his first year in the NBA, but not this rough. I remember seeing Kwame being interviewed on draft night and he was so articulate and seemed so grounded. And apparently Kwame is supposed to be a pretty good kid, but he's obviously been sheltered all his life, which I can't understand because his mother had to take care of eight children all by herself. You're telling me that Kwame never helped go buy groceries, cook, or even wash clothes? Man, his mother must be one hell of a woman.
From everything I've seen/heard about Kwame, is that he's a good guy. I don't think he'll get into any REAL legal matters like assault or drugs. I just don't know if he has the common sense to make it through an NBA career. What I'm fearful of is that his lack of common sense will lead him to associate himself with the wrong type of people who would use him for his status/fame, and get him in trouble by association. I really feel bad for what he's gone through in life, but I don't feel sorry for what he's done since he's been in the NBA.
DC Kid-What are most Wizards (the few that are out there) fans thoughts on Kwame? Imagine how Kwame would be if he played in NY.
Yes, there are very few TRUE wizards fans. When MJ goes, a lot of the support goes with him. However, the attendance was actually good pre-jordan. So, people do go to the games and casually follow the Wizards, but I don't think they have ever rooted for them the way they have this year...at least not in a long time. I went to about 18 or so games this season and during the games the fans definitely showed a lot of support for Kwame, especially at the beginning. I think as time went on and the Wizards actually proved they could be a playoff team, the support kind of faded and Kwame stopped playing. He was hurting the Wizards more than helping. But after Jordan went out and the season was pretty much over, people started cheering for him again. Everytime he would touch the ball the fans yell for him to shoot it in the hope he would prove something, but unfortunately he never really did. So, I would say the overall fan feeling towards Kwame has been somewhat of a roller-coaster ride. And now that the season's over and Kwame never really proved anything, you have a lot of fans wondering what the hell Jordan was thinking. Apparently the Rasheed-Kwame trade was actually discussed mid-season, so I wouldn't be surprised if the Wizards looked to see what they could get in return for Kwame over the offseason.
Good post. I also have my doubts about Kwame's abilities and at this point, would almost be completely against trading for Kwame no matter how good the deal would be (any realistic deal anyway). I'm sure Kwame's a good guy, but personally, I think it's much less responsible to drive 120mph than to light up a joint once in awhile, although I'm not condoning the latter.
I think you're right. I had a strong feeling the Wizards might be looking to trade Kwame to move up in the draft and get Jwill this offseason or maybe pull off something else, but now the number of "takers" have probably significantly dropped.
The Washington Post Story... I like the Jordan quote. Wizards' Brown Stopped for Speeding By Steve Wyche Washington Post Staff Writer Tuesday, April 30, 2002; Page D1 Washington Wizards forward Kwame Brown, who just completed his rookie season, was arrested for driving 120 mph Saturday afternoon in a construction zone in Dublin, Ga., near his hometown of Brunswick. Brown's driver's license will be suspended for a year, according to a spokesman at the Laurens County (Ga.) Sheriff's Department. He is scheduled to appear at the Laurens County courthouse on June 17, according to the traffic citation. Brown could not be reached for comment and SFX Sports Management, which represents him, did not comment. Arresting officer Kirk Hartwell told the Courier Herald of Dublin, Ga., that Brown "was very cooperative" and "just kept saying 'Michael Jordan is going to kill me.'‚" Brown, according to police, was driving with two male passengers in his 2002 Mercedes S600 on Interstate 16, which runs from Macon to Savannah, alongside a motorcycle that was traveling at an equally high speed around 3:10 p.m. The Associated Press reported that Brown and the motorcyclist were racing. Captain Larry Davidson of the Laurens County Sheriff's Department did not categorize the situation as a race but said information from the arrest showed Brown "seemed intent on not letting the motorcycle pass." After being taken to the Laurens County jail, Brown was released after posting $625 bail, according to a county release report. The report also showed another $625 charge but it was unclear if Brown had to pay that as well. Davidson said Brown showed no signs of being impaired so no sobriety tests were administered. Jordan could not be reached for comment. The Wizards declined to comment on the incident until further investigation; however, team officials said they were relieved that no one was hurt. Brown's arrest was the first of any kind for a Wizards' player this season. The franchise, which has been dogged by off-court problems in the recent past, was pleased that no problems surfaced this season, its best since 1997-98. Brown was the first high school player selected No. 1 overall in the draft last summer. This time last year he was still deciding whether to play in the NBA or attend the University of Florida, where he had accepted a scholarship offer. The 6-foot-10 forward struggled for most of the season, before showing vast improvement over the final month. He averaged 4.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 14.3 minutes in 57 games. He is projected as a possible starter next season. Brown is expected to spend much of his summer in Washington working out at the team's facility. He also is scheduled to play for the Wizards in a week's worth of summer league games in Boston and also attend Pete Newell's Big Man Camp with teammates Etan Thomas and Brendan Haywood.
Did they ticket the motorcyclist? I bet Kwame wanted to ask "Excuse me, do you have any Grey Poupo---uh---French dressing?"
ha ha, i guess you read that article in the washington post last week about kwame as well???? that story was REALLY eye opening... i mean dang, that guy didn't know how to grocery shop and admitted to eating Popeye's for breakfast, lunch, and dinner!!! he didn't know how to dryclean his suits for games, and just threw them in a corner of his house, having his manager teach him how to send out dry cleaning??? all i could say was WOW? why do people like that get millions of dollars??? unfair! i wish i was a 7 footer!
dckid-Where in DC are you from? My cousins live outside of Vienna, VA, in a town/city called Dunn Loring... At the very least, Was could have traded the #1 for Elton Brand. Would MJ's love for UNC have prevented that trade?
I probably live a couple of minutes from your cousins in Fairfax, which is just west of Dunn Loring. I still can't believe he didn't pull the trigger on that trade for Brand. But has that actually been proven that an offer was made? I mean it makes sense. If they were going to offer Brand for the second pick, why wouldn't they have first offered him for the #1 pick? But since Krause and Jordan don't like each other very much, I wonder if it was ever even discussed. I don't think his UNC bias had anything to do with Brand. After all, he did seem to like Laettner enough to sign him. But, it would be really weird if the Wizards somehow managed to get Jason Williams. I would say about 75% of Wizards fans are fans of Terps Basketball and they HATE Duke. They especially hate Jason Williams for those couple of times he whooped their ass. Still, I'm pretty sure Jordan would take him in a heartbeat.
They can teach him how to shop for groceries. There's no way they can teach you how to play basketball. Therefore he gets the millions.
