    Ewing in Washington

If you wanted to recover from fiscal genocide, and get rid of $16-18Million dollars of salary in one swipe, why wouldn't you look at acquiring Ewing. His final year and he goes somewhere else or retires.

Actually, if we truly wanted to start over next year. To wipe the slate clean like MJ wants to in DC-ville, I would be trading the Walt Wizbang, Drew, Carlos, Bullard, (and would probably have to include Kelvin) Cato for Ewing straight up.

But, I know, I know, we don't really need to unload all that to be successful this year. This is just playing here.

An interesting twin tower combo though, eh?
Dream and Patrick side by each as they say up north.

    Question

Would you trade Cato, Wizbang, Drew, Carlos, and our trade exception and a pick for New York's Ewing and the Clipper's Corey Maggette? (The Clips get Camby and Carlos, and the Knicks get everything else.)

    No.

As soon as one tower went on IR, the other would struggle with the increased load.

Also, both towers have a problem accepting that they are not the focus on offense.

Is there any bad stigma between Hakeem & Ewing?

Remember the 94 Championship? I think you could call that a stigma.

Interesting. This is probably the best hypothetical I've heard in a while. Makes incredible sense for all parties involved too.

Knicks: Are finally able to unload Ewing but they also get value for him instead of crap like Baker/Howard/Richmond. Cato has been a player they have had their eyes on since his Portland days and it would provide youth on a depleted frontline. The trade exception would be the real meat of the deal as the Knicks would be able to package it with Houston to bring in a Mutombo. How does Cato, Walt, Mutombo, Spree, and Childs sound?

Clippers: Lose Maggette, a player they don't need with Odom/D.Miles etc. there, and add Rogers and Camby to shore up depleted frontline.

Rockets: Gives the Rockets around $30million in spending power next summer with Hakeem's, Ewing's, Cato's, Walt's, Drew's and Carlos' respective contracts off the cap. That gives them more than enough to resign Mo, give Shandon his raise, and still go after Webber. As for this year, I would think they would have a better shot at winning the championship with Ewing/Olajuwon manning the center spot. Maggette provides another option on the wing.

Why I wouldn't do the deal: $30mill in cap space, but who do you spend it on? Is Chris Webber going to come here to play center? I don't like the idea of trading Cato when I know that there are no other better centers out there. Just imagine if he performs over 82 how he did in the preseason. We also have no need for Maggette. Adding him to our lineup just makes it look better on paper, but really does nothing. Langhi/Walt/Shandon is enough for the small forward spot.

Thirty million in cap space, and who would you spend it on? That's easy. Michael Finley. Boy can wreck his opponents. Franchise/Mooch, Shandon/Cat, Finley/Langhi, Mo/?(KT?/Pig?)...and then figure out the center.
Ewing would have to agree to the trade. We wouldn't promise him jack-squat. 24 minutes a game, $6 million, take it or leave it.
All of this is too hypothetical. Ewing says "yes, I'll go to Houston" (better than staying in New York in the wake of the 4-team debacle). Finley? Says he wants to stay in Dallas. Don't know why. Nelson's a doorknob, stuck in the 1950s.
OR....We could somehow get Brad Miller in a 3-way trade (using exception). We would have to get another center.
Getting Maggette? Interesting. Why not just get Maggette and send him to Chicago for their #1 pick next year? Bound to be a top 10. Combine our #1 with Milwaukee #1 and Chicago #1 and get into the top 3 and take Eddy Curry. Or just grab Terrence Morris and other young talent.
Man, don't get me started like this. The possibilities are endless, the probabilities few, but these scenarios are interesting, and the season TOO FAR AWAY.

Five years ago, a Ewing/Olajuwon combo at the 4/5 would have made me salivate like Pavlov's dog. Of course, 5 years ago, Corey Magette was just out of middle school.

Now, you'd have 2 banged up, sometimes-productive players up front. Both of whom are now slow and thus liabilities on D and in the fast break. And both seem to play the high post now, taking jumpers more than making low-post moves (of course, wasn't that always the case with Pat?). Magette is promising, but I don't know that he is what we are looking for at the 3, ie would his game fill what we need from that spot?

And I'm not sure what we would do with that cap space. Sure, Cwebb, Mutombo, and Finley would be great on the team. But I'm afraid of becoming the Bulls, left holding the proverbial bag, and then what is worse compounding the problem by paying our free agents (Taylor and Anderson) more than they are worth on the market, because we've got the $$ available.

I think we're going to have the space to go after 1 big free agent this summer anyway. I'd like to see us keep role players like Cato and Walt around, unless / until we can find someone who can fill our needs better. Carlos and Drew (if I'm not mistaken) are both going to be FAs after next season anway.

What that really boils down to is Cato and Walt for Corey and a ton of cap space. IF you can get Webber I'd do it. But that's not a guarantee.

Whats with all this Maggette crap? He is another Tracy Murray. We don't need him. He is a guard. We have 3 pretty good guards already, don't we?

i like finley but cuban will never let him go..there is no way..

i kind of like the idea of clearing this space yet the argument against not having a true center once ewing and dream leave is an issue...i agree though..that we would be a contender with dream and ewing manning the center/ pf position..

it really goes against conventional thinking thats why i am for it...

i think we could compete with SA and the rest of the west...

i would pull the trigger on it but it will never happen..interesting idea though..

Actually, if Hakeem has his health in order and Ewing did too (big ifs, I know) they would really be a force to reckon with. Even in light of their age, both could still produce. Ewing had a pretty good year last season. I feel Hakeem would have too if he had not incurred all the injuries and breathing problems.
