Jeff Van Gundy will be on the sports radio station WFAN here in NYC. I have cancelled all meetings!!! This is much more important! I will post his comments right after its over.
lol........THAT'S THE WAY MAN! SCREW WORK! GO ROCKETS! You are a true fan!!!!!! Please tell us what he says.
what time? i don't have a radio in my office...but i might find one if he hasn't already been on the air.
lol........that important?!? Basketball should not interfere with work.... Can someone please ban this guy from the Rockets game analysis and strategy board? He doesn't seem to be devoted enough to merit senior membership status.
I wonder if he's going to announce that he's going to quit on his team 19 games into the season. No wait he already did that.

Here goes:

Middle of the Interview:

Van Gundy: Well, I think that obviously if you have a coaching vacancy, you can call Brown first. He did a great job in Philly. I spoke with Billy King(Philly) for an hour and we agreed that we are not a good fit. It was a great talk. And very helpful. But we agreed. Cleveland and Houston is up in the air. I have had no indication. There has been no offers as of now.

Interviewer: Do you have any reservations with Cleveland and James and making all that money so early?

Gundy: I was really impressed with the meeting I had with Gund and Paxon. Certanly a 17 win team is a challenge for any coach. They have a good center to build from and they are probably gonna get James, who from what I hear is coachable and a hard worker. That is a situation is a true rebuilding and a great challenge.

Interviewer: You think you can deal with rebuilding?

Van Gundy: Well, if anyone knows me, I think winning 50 games is still too much losing. But I tell you what you will not meet a greater team than Gund and Pasxon.

Interviewer: You gotta think about Houston. There is no doubt that Yao is gonna win a ring here pretty soon without any hesitation. That would be nice to coach that guy for a few years, eh?

Van Gundy: I talked to a GM and he told me this about Houston. Want to know what's the best thing about the Rockets? Everyday you wake up, Yao Ming is 7 feet 5.
Yea, they have an interesting team. I have so much respect for Rudy T. They have had so much bad luck winning 45 games and don't make the playoffs. How crazy is that? In the east they could probably win 55 or so. They need to mature a bit. I spoke to Dawson and he is so committed to winning. And so is their owner.

Interviewer: So, would you see yourself coaching next year? What are the chances in your mind?

Van Gundy: In my gut, I would say that in my gut I am 50/50 to coaching next year. Plus, when you live where you living...the tri-state area, you get it all...it will be hard to move.

Interviewer: It will be hard to live there (IN HOUSTON) because Dallas is a city. But Houston is TEXAS. So much open space. So much land for miles and miles in such a big city like that. We went to Houston for the Finals and everything closes so early...

Gundy: First thing I would do if I work there is to jump into the rafters and rip down that 1994 banner!! That was painful. I guess if you can't beat them, I can join them. (Laughter)

I couldn't have had a better year than being on TNT. I truly have enjoyed being in basketball without truly being in it. Fratello and Marv have been so good to me and I truly enjoyed it. It has given me the opportunity to truly not miss coaching and gives me something to fall back on if I don't work this year in the coaching biz.

END

This is what I took out of it. The man is in no rush. He is gonna look for the right job. But to ME, its Houston or bust. He didn't sound too happy about going to Cleveland. But he is a little concerned about the way of life he is use to know and what he will be doing in Houston.

I am from Houston, and I see what he means. Living in NYC is just...different. This area in general. More electricity. Some people like that. I do. Some people don't. But, he was WAY MORE positive about Houston than about Cleveland. And there is no shot for him to go to Philly.

The interview will be replayed. If I can, I will tape it and put it up on the site if possible.

Thanks for the report! Interesting that Philly and Van Gundy is a no go. Looks indeed like either Houston or Cleveland are the choices for him.
Thanks Almu. It is different up there. I don't know if I could handle it 24/7, but it sure is nice to visit.
It sounds to me like other pieces are lining up after the Brown puzzle is in place! 1) If Brown comes to Houston - > JVG goes to Cleve. 2) If Brown goes to LAC -> JVG comes to Hou -> Silas goes to Cleve. Either way is fine with me.
So he wants to come to Houston....but we haven't offered him the job yet. THAT IS THAT. I'd like him.... Don't really like Dunleavy. Silas is all right. Larry Brown is still the man....if he doesn't come here..or he wants to be GM...then JVG will be good. Les wouldn't give Carroll Dawson's job away!
If you can't beat them, you join them...... hmm....maybe that's a hint. In all seriousness, I would love to have Van Gundy as a coach. I thought he did a great job in New York while he was there, and he seems more like a "rudy T" type of coach than Larry Brown. I think the players would be able to adapt to his coaching style much better. Carry on... Cod
