With free agency on horizon, Chris Paul says he ‘loves it’ in Houston

LOS ANGELES — As his first regular season with the Rockets reached its final days in the last season of his contract, guard Chris Paul said he has not even considered the decisions that will come next other than to say he has been very happy in Houston. For now, he said, that’s enough.

Paul will be a free agent this offseason. But with the Rockets heading to the post-season with the NBA’s best record, Paul said he does not think about what could come next.

“Not at all,” Paul said. “Not one time. Not once. I just always worry about right now.”

About as close as Paul came to showing his hand came when it was pointed out that at 33 years old with a family that lives where he plays, he will be making a life decision, prompting him to say he hoped that he made that decision with the move to Houston and was happy with how it has worked.

“That’s what happened when the trade happened,” Paul said. “I love it here. I love it here.”

9-time NBA All-Star Chris Paul gives his thoughts on acting, living in Houston and playing Karl-Anthony Towns in NBA 2K.

    Media: Sports Illustrated
Paul, who turns 33 next month, will be eligible for a five-year, $205 million contract with the Rockets in July with a starting salary of $35.3 million. Because he was acquired in a trade, rather than as a free agent, the Rockets will have full Bird rights to allow them to exceed the salary cap to sign Paul.

Rockets general manager Daryl Morey has said he cannot speak about contracts, but that elite point guards with Paul’s style of play have played well late into their careers. Paul went into Tuesday’s game against the Lakers averaging 18.6 points and 7.9 assists. He is on pace to have the second season in NBA history in which a player has averaged at least 18 points, seven assists and five rebounds in fewer than 32 minutes per game, having been the first to do it last season.

"Obviously, when we get someone as great as Chris Paul or James Harden, the plan is to keep him here,” Morey said during the season. “He'll have a choice when the season ends. We feel like we set things up well. It should be an easy choice for him."

Prior to Tuesday’s game, the Rockets were 49-8 in games Paul has played.

“I thought he was one of the best point guards in the last 10 years for sure, whenever,” Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni said. “He’s just a great, great point guard. Nothing surprised me. Just getting to know him, you know he’s a competitor, but every day when you see him and watch how he thinks the game, you appreciate what he has. I didn’t know that. It doesn’t surprise me.

“He is one of the smartest basketball players. And chemistry kind of guy, the way he figures out the way the team can play the best that it can, it’s been a joy to see.”

The Rockets hope to see plenty of that this spring, with how much more will come to be determined even if Paul has loved what he has seen so far.

I like cp3 alot but 205 mill thru the ages 36,37, and 38 doesn't sound intriguing.

Of course. No state tax and overcrowded freeways like L.A. What's there not to love about Houston. I would be shocked if Morey offered him the max though. I was disappointed to hear that the Rockets were nearly about to sign CP3 before he decided to sign with Clippers back then.

He is not going anywhere. Says nothing but good things about the city and team. Just a matter
of a super-max 5-year contract or a two year deal with player option going forward this summer.

Possibly taking less money like Durant did for one year as a means of adding a banana boat friend.
The 2-yr deal w/player option on 2nd yr comes into play here.

I'm hoping he takes a pay cut. He's gotta know that paying any 36-39 year old that much can't be good for the team, right? I want CP3 here long-term too, but we could really screw ourselves a few years down the road. Who knows, maybe it doesn't matter with how the cap is structured now, but it just doesn't seem wise. CP3 wants to win, too, so I think there's a chance he doesn't take the max...but maybe I'm just blind.

I wish we could sign him to 4 yr 80 mil but let’s not worry about that because Morey already has a plan

He bought a brand new house in the Woodlands. He also loves golf and his house is on the golf course of Carlton Woods. He’s not going anywhere.

My guess is that his contract will be 5 years but lower annual value and probably fifth year partially guaranteed and expected to be bought out by then. Everyone knows getting CP3 will be good for the front end and bad for the backend so not much we can do about that. This is the cost of getting a player that can let you win 65 games and compete for a championship.

National media headline: CP3 says "I just always worry about right now.” Unhappy in Houston?
