With Dooling available, would you take him to play Luther Head's minutes?

With Dooling available (assuming that Orlando cannot resign him), do we take him with what is left of the MLE (after signing Landry) and let him play Head's minutes? I wanna hear what you guys know about his game.

I know little about Dooling's game and I wonder what kind of upgrade he would be over Head.
Here's the description that I get from hoopshype.com (when I was trying to research his previous salary so that's why I was there):
Great athlete... Very long... Could develop into a pretty good defensive player... Not a good shooter... Not a great playmaker... Makes wrong decisions very often. So I leave it up to y'all.

Francis [hopefully] has the undersized combo guard quota covered.

I'd rather try to swing a deal like Hayes for Redick since Redick is clearly being shopped, Orlando has a need for a real PF that rebounds/defends and we need to get rid of the plethora of 6'6" PF's on our roster.

between reddick and luther you have two shooters who can't get minutes because they can't guard any nba players or get their shot off against taller/more athletic players.

hayes to orlando is a good idea (im sure they'd be interested in him) but i don't think anyone they'd offer in return would be much help.

Well, i'm operating under the premise that we either move Luther or Redick replaces him in the rotation.

Redick is a better shooter in all regards. I don't care about the NBA numbers but when you compare Redick's picture-perfect jumper to Luther's slow, unorthodox, fling shot it's not even close as to who i'd rather have taking those open looks.

Redick is also one of the best FT shooters i've ever seen. Considering our 4th quarter brain cramps it would be nice to have a guy out there capable of stepping to line & icing a game.

Also, helpless defenders with quick releases like Redick can be useful in the NBA. Just take a look at Korver. I think it's a worthy gamble since Hayes is likely out of the rotation anyways.

i can see how redick would be considered an upgrade over luther, but not a very substantial one IMO.

also, hayes value on this roster would sky rocket if landry isn't re-signed. i wouldn't be so quick to write him off just yet.

i'd like to see how FA fairs before thinking about trades.

Hayes for Redick would be alright, but I think we would need to get a 2nd round pick in return. Also, Redick has a team option for the 2009-10 season, so this could also free up so cap space.

i'd trade chuck for a resigned mo evans but only after landry has resigned and dorsey has shown something in the summer league.

jj reddick? i'd give them luther for him but nothing more.

Why is it that someone like Brent Barry is loved, and he can't guard Dick Bavetta?

While Redick and Novak get blasted......

To me it is because one got the opportunity to play in a good situation and got established.......

I would do this so fast your head would spin and SVG would probably love Chuck more than Adelman.

hayes is definitely more valuable than reddick. we need to get a draft pick as well, or find a better deal. if we can't find a good deal before the season starts, i'd rather keep hayes and see what's available when the trade deadline nears. no sense in making trades for the sake of making trades.

I think Barry is going to take a lot of Luther's minutes.

I've seen him play for Orlando. He is a combo guard. He is a pretty good ball handler who can drive without turning the ball over.He is quite gutsy but he can't pass and is a erratic shooter. His height, length and athleticism is very good for a PG but he isn't strong enough to defend SG's and isn't particularly good while defending PG's either. He makes wrong decisions while trying to run the point as well. Mo Evans isn't as athletic as Dooling but is a better choice as a 2 guard.

    it's because:

    1. barry is a proven veteran with lots of experience and a nice career.
    2. barry is not undersized.
    3. barry actually has a well rounded game (great shooter, great passer, decent rebounder, can play pg, sg, sf)

novak is average at best in every single aspect of the game besides shooting. he has no other strength and no versatility at all. with reddick it's almost the same.

but, of course we would love barry even more if he was younger and could still defend better. but, nonetheless, he's ten times the player reddick or novak are.

i've never blasted novak. i think his hight makes him able to get his shot off. he's also valuable as a "spread-4"... but your point is valid.

in response i can only say that while barry and redick are both great shooters who are helpless on defense, barry adds ball handling and passing to the team.

    NO!!!!!

because he is not going to contribute in our playoff squad if we want to advance to at least the WCF.

we need to trade for a guy like mike miller. has to be a big scorer.

if we can get anybody from ORL, dooling does make some sense. he can shoot better than Evans, can defend, and can play the point, but we need some more wing players who are bigger and more athletic than Reddick and Luther, so Evans would be ideal there as well. maybe we can swing a deal, send them Luther, Chuck, + Memphis 2nd round pick for Dooling, Evans.

That was great insight guys. That's one of the 1st threads that I've ever started and I really like y'all's feedback.

2nd part of the decision - Jamal Tinsley (next 3 years salary: 6,750,000; $7,200,000; $7,500,000). Does it make sense to do a SnT with Landry, signing him to the MLE, and then trading him to Indiana it it gets us Tinsley, who is a MAJOR upgrade to Rafer in all categories except injury?

To me, Indiana is "interested" in Landry. Barry is signing for the LLE. The MLE is ours to play with, and the carrot (Landry) could net us a quality starting guard that is guaranteed to us for the next couple of years (last contact year 2010/11)

Again, if the injury bug can stay away for a while, and we still have an opportunity to use Landry as leverage, and we see trading Jackson and Francis at the deadline, should we pull the trigger?

Tinsley is definitely not a major upgrade to Rafer. For one, he plays when he feels like it and we have enough of that already with T-Mac. I've seen him do some incredibly stupid things much more regularly than Alston.

I say no to Tinsley. At his best, he is better than Rafer, no doubt. But he doesn't do his best too often and he is basically a clone of Rafer - good ballhandler and passer, bad shooter, can't really comment on his defense but it can't be much better than Rafer's. That contract is bad as well.

There is only one point guard that is probably obtainable and who would actually be an obvious upgrade over Rafer, Kirk Hinrich. Either we get him, or Rafer is our starter again.

Edit: Also, if Marbury is bought out, I'd much rather give him a chance for the min than to take on Tinsley's deal.
