Today on this board people are talking about trading Brooks, Battier, Budinger, Hill and Scola. But what if we did nothing more but add a lottery and bring back a healthy Yao.

I know that is not a guarantee but what if next year Yao comes back rested and healthy. We've already added Kevin Martin, Budinger will become better defensively over the offseason. We have a solid backcourt and defensive SFs in Arriza and Battier. With Yao coming back and maybe Hill emerging as a decent backup. (yea I know I am the guy who doubted this but last night changed my mind and made me a little hopeful)... Derek Andersen helping us spread the court against guys like Mehmet and Scola giving us the most solid consistent 4 that we've had since Othis Thorpe plus a lottery big like Greg Monroe coming in to back him up not to mention Jeffries filling in at spots.

IMO We have the most well rounded team ever. We can put a team on the court without making one trade that IMO is much better than that 22 game winning streak team. Much better than that team that took the Lakers to 7 in the second round. Much Much better than anything we've put on the court so far this year and we are a 500 win team. Imagine how could we could be if we had Arriza Lowry healthy and we got to jell for a month. We have the talent right now to be a playoff team once the new guys learn their roles. And Imagine with more experience together and adding Yao and a decent Lottery big.

So if we don't get Bosh or some other high profile big can we win a championship with this team?

Derek Anderson? Thanks for bringing back the memories I thought I had forgotten long ago...

Morey won't trade our assets just for the sake of making something happen.

If we get Bosh(or somebody comparable), fine.

If we don't, we keep adding assets and cross our fingers one of them blossoms into a franchise player or helps us get one in the future. But I don't believe in rebuilding in a sense that you demolish everything and start fresh every few years, even if the chance of winning it all seems to be quite remote.

True, but will yield a very, very good team that will improve through the draft easily via all the picks. With Yao/Scola/Lowry returning and all the other pieces staying in place, with Brooks/Budinger (and maybe Hill?) maturing, Martin fitting in more, and using the MLE on a solid player, we will improve and be up there with Dallas/Denver.

A lottery pick from NYK could put us over in 2011, who knows?

Again, don't take not trading for a max free agent as "standing pat." We all know Morey will be trying his damnedest, but remember that the stars must align for us to get a max free agent via S&T. If we don't get one, it certainly won't be for lack of trying which I'm sure most of you will misconstrue it as (as the OP already has).

I definitely think Morey will try hard to improve the team via trade this summer.

However, if that fails, and assuming that no trades or free agent signings (other than Scola and Lowry) occur between now and February 2011, then the Rockets will be uniquely positioned to "blow up the team" in the summer of 2011.

If Yao is not able to come back at nearly the same level next year, and it is apparent that he will never be even a top ten center in the league (highly unlikely IMHO), then the Rockets have the option of parting ways with him in 2011 if a reasonable new contract cannot be reached.

Presumably, the Rockets would only have salary commitments for 2011-12 to Kevin Martin, Trevor Ariza, Luis Scola, Kyle Lowry, Jordan Hill (his 11-12 option must be picked up before the 2010-11 season), Chase Budinger (no way that team option isn't picked up), their 2010 and 2011 first round picks, and some chump change owed on David Andersen's partial guarantee ($135k).

With a new CBA in place, likely making it harder to add talent if you are over the salary cap, the Rockets might be positioned to become major players in free agency. Sure, they'll likely try and sign Brooks to a new contract. But they could also pursue other free agents as well.

I'm not saying that this is MY preferred route. But the Rockets would most definitely have great flexibility in 2011 if they brought back the current team and didn't commit max money to a guy like Bosh or Stoudemire.

Yao won't BE back next year. You know the Ilgauskas situation. It took 2 years for him to return to form. He will be there but he will be trying to get back.

If we stay put this team will be worse than it is now. Even with a 20 minute Yao we would suck

I think Bosh and Yao could take us very far in the playoffs.

I really wouldn't mind it if we got back a TJ Ford from Toronto.

I would be fine standing pat but I'd also realize we would be severe underdogs to the Lakers, Orlando and maybe Cleveland along with any contender that aquires a max player. Doesn't mean we won't challenge for a title but it may depend on the development of Hill, Bud and a lottery pick.

I'm sure that no medical advancements have been made in the past 8 years since big Z had the operation to make Yao's recovery smoother

Yeah, maybe we should trade Charlie Villanueva for him?

We have the option of trading Yao as a big expiring contract. if Yao does not work out. We can do a trade similar to the Mcgrady trade. We have Jeffries's contract also to do something like that. We have so many assets you have to believe success will happen eventually.

There will be deals in the future but it is too soon to know what will happen. We have to wait until the offseason and the trade deadline to have any idea of how we do next season. (I know, more waiting.)

No chance of a championship with this line up plus a healthy Yao/low lottery pick.

I think giving up Scola plus assets for Chris Bosh is enough without giving up Brooks. If Brooks is the final straw and last resort..then by all means...do it.

Then we will be nothing more than a Tier 2, Tier B team. We will need Pure Luck and injuries on the opposing teams to make it all the way to the finals.
