I found this article very interesting. With the way everyone around here keeps talking about the implementation of the new offense, this article should be a good read. http://espn.go.com/nba/columns/smith_sam/1457275.html I think the Rockets are a case study for the article.
Shot caller, Thanks for the post. Very interesting read! Makes me wonder if we are coming into or are already in an era where it may be easier for a college coach to jump to the NBA level and be successful because of his teaching skills.
I think its more overcoaching than anything. If a team avg 110ppg and gives up 100, they don't play defense, but if a team scores 90ppg and gives up 86,they play defense. Even though the pt spread is greater, if your team gives up 100, they don't play defense. Pat Riley,Van Gundy,Rudy T and other coaches want to call every play from the sideline instead of installing a system and let the players play. Its true that if teams go on a run, then the coach needs to call or set up to get a good shot, but for the most part, when the pg gets the outlet, he shouldn't have to await the coaches direction for a play. Next time when given the chance, watch how many plays Nelson,Scott,Adelman,Jackson, and Rivers call from the sideline. i think its more coaching building a team around 1 or 2 good players and putting scrubs or role players out there for the rest. Why not have an offense that can use everyones strength and doesn't rely on 1 guy getting everyone shots.
