I'm 20 about to turn 21 and My mouth has been hurting for the last week, I got a fever and the back of my mouth was ridicously inflated, I called my dentist and he gave me Vicodin to relieve me until Tuesday when he is open again. I have to get my Wisdom Teeth pulled.. I got two questions

    1. Is it normal to be almost 21 and just now getting your Wisdom teeth pulled? I always thought it was an early teen thing

    2. How long is the recovery, if I get it pulled would I be able to return to work wednesday or thursday?? How long should I tell my job that I'll be out recovering

i got mine pulled at 19. my friend got his pulled two days ago...i recovered in about 4 days. the swelling was gone in about 2 days...

i suggest you get them pulled if you feel pain in your mouth. also if they start coming in, they can push your teeth together making them crooked...

    1. I got mine pulled at 21. My mother actually got them pulled a few years ago.

    2. It really varies from person to person. I stayed home for a day (you will probably be talking funny for a while though).

Yes it is normal, although range tends to vary. I know someone who didn't get his pulled till in his 30s. Years ago when I went to the dentist I had to get x-rayed and they caught mine before they surfaced.

You need them pulled whether they cause you initial pain or not cause they are useless teeth that could cause you pain (cavities) in the future, they can also misalign your current teeth like someone mentioned.

I don't remember how long it took me to recover, but it's annoying as hell. Just keep your painkillers and pudding nearby... and do exactly what they instruct so you don't get dry sockets which will cause you further pain.

I had mine out in September (at age 36) and hardly had any discomfort that the Darvoset couldn't take care of. I was back at work with a weekends rest.

I had mine removed in two operations separated by a few years while in my 40s. As I understand it a big factor in the timetable is the structure of your jaw. My jaw was such that the W teeth were not crowding other teeth. The first came out due to a cavity in it; the second I don't remember why...

Mine too. They didn't crowd the other teeth, but try were so far back that cleaning them was extremely difficult, so they had to be taken out as a result of cavities.

Got my wisdom teeth out 3 weeks ago WITHOUT GENERAL ANESTESIA. It went GREAT. The Doctor was great and simply numbed the area with the local anesthetic and gave me a pill which made me very very very relaxed. the procedure was great. My teeth were crooked also and it wasn't an easy procedure. Great Doctor. If you are interseted let me know and i can give you the information

I had them out when I was 18 so getting them at a young age is normal.

They say they come out when you become wiser than a child. Which explains a lot about the people who got them removed at a later age.

More importantly, make sure the dentist doesn't give you an "attitude" when discussing your wisdom teeth extraction.

3rd molars can be removed at any time...most often, it takes place between 18-25 or so. However, you can be 60 and have them removed.

Also, contrary to popular belief, 3rd molars dont "push" the other teeth and cause crowding. Lay that theory to rest. There are other reasons to get 3rd molars removed.

First, the mouth normally does not have room for wisdom teeth. Therefore, many 3rd molars that erupt do so at an angle that is not in alignment with other teeth.

Secondly, and imo, most importantly, it is difficult to keep them clean back there. People already get lazy with flossing as it is. Throw in the fact that you have to reach all the way back there, and it makes flossing less appealing. Mix that with the fact that its hard to get your brush around all the surfaces of the 3rd molars and youve got yourself a situation where bacteria can easily invade it. Is it really worth it to spend money on composite restorations or a crown when you can extract it? Assuming you decide to get a crown for that tooth...if you had problems keeping it clean back there to begin with, then not much is gonna change after you get the crown. Also the dentist will have a much harder time making an appropriately fitting crown since its so far deep into the mouth. As a result, the patient needs to do a much better job trying to keep the margins of the crown clean. In other words, the crown is bound to fail at some point, and further procedures will be needed...which just means youve been throwing away time and money this whole time when you could have just had them extracted at the first sign of a problem.

If you have 3rd molars that have come out and have not given you problems, then keep them in there and keep them clean. Otherwise, yank those suckers to save yourself problems at a later date. They are unnecessary.

If you are on a health plan then go to an oral surgeon. Get them all out at once. Will be cheaper and better.

Somehow humans have survived for tens of thousand of years without having wisdom teeth removed.
