I go to a small high school and we're planning on testing out some wirless networking to allow teachers to use a mobile lcd projector connected to a laptop and we want the laptop to have a wireless access to the network.

From what we understand all we need is an access point and a wireless card. So can we just pay $100 for an access point and connect it to the network with an ethernet wire and the wireless network card from the laptop will pick up the signal?

It says that it has a 11mbps, does that mean they take that signal and split it so many ways or does every computer get a 11 mbps?
Please take in to consideration, walls and distance. Unless you have some sort of actual access point in each room it will be difficult across campus.
http://www.howstuffworks.com/wireless-network.htm Here is a good read that explains how it works. It describes one for home networking, but it pretty much works the same, if you are trying to set it up at school.
