OK, yes they do exist, but I'm wondering if I can get one. Searching the web, I've found two potential "wireless modem" options (wireless modem meaning that I can use my laptop on the road or in a cafe or whatever and be connected to the internet): (1) Compaq's IPaqNet ( http://www.ipaqnet.com ). While I have a Compaq laptop, it appears this system is only designed for Compaq Business Laptops, so it's not an option. It is quite slow, but better than nothing. (2) The Ricochet Network ( http://www.ricochet.com ). This one works on any type of computer and is higher-speed, but only available in Denver right now. Anyone know of any other wireless options out there? Both of the above are flat-rate billed rather than per-minute, and that's what I'm ideally looking for.
I have an Sierra Aircard 300 and although I used it thought the ipaqNet service, I believe it also works with Verizon's and AT&T Wireless' CDPD networks. I got pretty good coverage , although it was very slow. As an aside, mine worked on various laptops (not just my Armada) and my Pocket PC. ipaqNet is really just a reseller if AT&T/Verizon, I think... If you're looking for performance, you might want to wait for either Richochet to return (but I think they will take their time, this time) or GPRS ("3G") solution to appear. Anyway, here's some links: x34 AT&T GMS/GPRS AT&T Wireless CDPD Verizon Wireless Services (CDPD)
Excellent -- thanks for the information! I will have to call Compaq and see what they say about the IPaqNet thing, as well as check out all those links.
I hook up my laptop through my cell phone. I have Sprint, and pay 5$ a month extra so that the minutes come out of my plan, instead of being billed per minute. They have some sort of PC card modem too. It's slow (14.4) but better than nothing.
