All right all you tech heads, I've got a PII-400,Win 98 and a Dell Laptop PIII-700, Win98SE...I would like to install a wireless network in my house so we can use the laptop in any room. I have a DSL line and would like to share that connection. What brand of equipment do you recommend for Home Wireless Networking, how difficult are these things to install. What kind of router/splitter do I need to share my DSL line? I have minimal networking skills and any advice, tips or info is greatly appreciated. Thanks! rH ------------------ visit: The Psychedelic Groove House of Rockets Basketball Love!
I've never done a wireless network before, so I'm ignorant about those things. I'm not sure how good they are. I have the "wired" version of this product and it works great and is easy to set up. I would doubt it would be much different to set up. You can also go to places like Micro Center or CompUSA and they'll sell you kits that have everything you need. Another company that makes a popular wireless networking package is Intel, but I think if that product is like any other Intel product it's priced higher than the Linksys. ------------------ NBA Draft Lottery is May 20th. This product Linksys W11S4 has been highly recommended from a friend who does do wireless networking. This may be the one I go with. rH ------------------ visit: The Psychedelic Groove House of Rockets Basketball Love! [This message has been edited by rockHEAD (edited May 17, 2001).]
I have heard good things about the wireless set up from Orinoco. Basically (with any wireless system), you connect the "base" to you cable/DSL modem. You install PCI or PCMCIA cards in your desktop or laptop. You install any necessary software and you are on your way. If you are concerned about security, you may want to look into installing a router as well or see if the "base" contains a router. You would want to use a network that has speeds up to 11 MB/s. Some of the cheaper models (AnyPoint?) may only go up to 1 MB/s. You also want to check into the distance. I believe the Orinoco model goes up to 800 feet. In addition, you apparantly lose speed for every wall that the signal has to pass through. ------------------
Hey, that's the same product I recommended!!! GIMME CREDIT, TOO! I love Linksys products. Lots of features, and priced for the "average" consumer, not for the ultra-rich businesses. ------------------ NBA Draft Lottery is May 20th. Start praying now.
So do I. I've never had a problem with their products, and they're always well-priced. They do a great job in drivers, and Linux support as well. ------------------ "Up and down, inside out, outside in, some you lose some you win" -- DMB -> "Sweet Up and Down"
Thanks Doc! Thanks everyone for their advice. I'm going with Linksys... I'll be online, $hopping tonight! woo hoo! rH ------------------ visit: The Psychedelic Groove House of Rockets Basketball Love!
FYI Amazon.com and buy.com has it for $230. You may also want to see if you can find a coupon for those sites and if they're offering free shipping. Amazon had it as one of their deals of the day 2 days ago for $221 + free shipping - $15 coupon. But that was then... I don't know if they have it today. ------------------ NBA Draft Lottery is May 20th. Start praying now.
