There are many signs that winter is over and spring is only one "pull of the lawn mower cord" away...You can walk outside in the morning and your breath doesn't turn into water vapor anymore...Tree branches start sprouting leaves...However, the other day, I heard the single most obvious sign that winter is truely over...I heard someone on TV say, "Pitchers and Catchers report to spring training"...Which brings me to the main point of this post...

Does baseball even HAVE an offseason??

Who the hell cares about baseball?!!!! The game has lost all of its sexiness!! Let's think now. Who will be in the playoffs come October? One would not have to have atom splitting powers to make such a prediction. What a freaking crock baseball has become!!!!

The three best signs I've seen that winter is over:

    1. The snow geese are beginning to migrate back to the north. This started last month. This year is the first year we've had snow geese this far south in quite a while.

    2. The robins are back. Just about a week ago the robins began popping up around town. This is a sure sign of spring returning.

    3. The monarch butterflies are gone. They won't be back until summertime.

Having a yard that is a natural habitat for birds, insects and plants tends to make you more aware of the seasons. Last year, we even got certified as a backyard wildlife habitat in the US and in Texas although it is both the front and the back yards that are landscaped in that way. My wife was responsible for putting us on this track and it is really interesting because the changing seasons take on much more drama. I never paid much attention before but now I do all the time.

Houston doesn't really have the wild seasonal changes you see further to the north - dramatic leaf color changes, migratory birds, leaves falling, snow, thaw, etc. So, to see more of what nature is doing up close is fascinating.

Plus, I never have to mow the grass - EVER!!! Woo hoo!!! We don't have any! [IMG]

Houston had a winter? When? How come my area of town wasn't told???? None of our trees lost leaves, heck most of them didn't even change color. You can drive by the Memorial area NW side of town and see trees still there with all green. Dammit what was the lowest temp this season, like 32 right?

Here in my town we have just had a month of temperatures above 30c everyday and probably at least 3/4 of the days have been above 36C or 100F

Not all trees in the Houston area lose their leaves or even have them change. Many oak trees, for example, are evergreens and stay that way year round except when they are very young.

A number of others like magnolias and pine trees will stay green as well no matter how cold it gets. We lost all of the leaves on our pecan trees and we saw plenty of color changes on the elms and other trees in the area.

I think the lowest temp we saw this year was in the high 20's, but it was markedly colder this year than it was in the past 3 years.

    Winter over?

    Not here! Not yet!

It's not uncommon to have snow fluries on opening day of baseball season.

    First signs of spring?

When I start dreaming about the first camping/fishing trip of the year!

I've been in Amarillo this week. On Monday it was around 60 degrees. Yesterday, it got no higher than 40 degrees. Today, it's already 51 degrees and will probably get up to around 60 again. The weatherman last night said that it could snow in Amarillo in the next few days.

Personally, I don't care whether it's winter or spring, but I wish they'd just pick one and go with it. This winter one day, spring the next thing gets old really fast (and makes me eager to get back to Arlington).
