Ok, some friends and i are thinking about packing up my car and going on a road trip. we want to do one of the corners, but not sure which is the best for the season.ive been to nyc and boston several times for xmas and love it up there during the winter. we would try to go to both those cities and also montreal and someplace else... not sure. but needless to say ive been there couple times and know what to expect. weather wise... cold and snow, which is a novelty for those from texas.
i heard the pacific northwest is beautiful during the summer and fall but during the winter months (dec and early jan) its really cold and rainy. I have never been up there and have always wanted to go, but dont know if its worth it if its true that it rains the whole time. plus what cities are good for new years up there? vancouver.... seattle....portland.... san francisco? helll i dont know what to do. help me out someone. thanks

I'd hit up Vancouver, it's one of my favorite North American cities.

we had a british exchange student last year, he and my roomate basically traveled from baltimore to atlanta to new orleans, houston, phenoix, and eventually some where in cali where he had relatives. took them 3 weeks to get there. flew back the day before class started lol. just make sure you plan it out.

yeah, I'd go with Pacific Northwest. aim for San Fran/Berkley, then go for Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver... maybe you can catch some basketball games. oh wait, never mind. not in Seattle or Vancouver :p

Nov-Feb you are looking at a lot of rain in the NW. However, this is mostly west of the Cascades. Anything east of the Cascades will have a much better chance of being clear (although snow is possible). It gets dark around 5 in the winter, so have something to do indoors. Great skiing. Coast is usally overcast, windy, wet. Some areas in southern Oregon coast don't get the clouds and rain as much.

so white lightening... would you think its a bad idea to visit during that time of year. we would want to be west of the cascades. but apparently its awfully rainy.

As above -- unless you're coming for the skiing -- Nov to Feb is the darkest, wettest time for the PNW -- certainly Oregon on up. There's a reason hotels are less then half the price they are in the summer!

Still great stuff to see. And as we say here, there's no such thing as bad weather -- only inadequate clothing. So if you're OK with the rain -- should be a good trip. The winter storms on the coast can be breathtaking.

Rain has it's own charm. Fog settling in the foothills. Dark winding roads through forests. Muddy forest hikesand mountain bike trails. Parts of almost every day will usually be clear. It really depends on what you want to do. In Portland, there's lots to see during the day that's inside. But if you are not used to it, the rain and darkness might get to you after a couple of days. If the weather is sunny, then you will have so much to do you won't know where to start.

What kind of stuff are you looking to do? Mostly outside or inside? Ski? Hike? Shop? Drink beer?

I'm headed to the north west. Vernon, CA. Going snowboarding at Silver Star. :D Can't wait, staying in a condo in the Village.
