I had a rock hit my windshiled on 610 the other day. The little starpoint quickly spread into an 18" crack. Can cracks be repaired or do I need a whole new windshield? What's the approximate cost to get it replaced?

    18 inches??
    that's what she said)

Anyways, you'll probably have to pony up for a new windshield for a crack that big. Insurance should cover at least some of it, though...

A-Train's right - I used to do rock chip repairs, and anything with a diameter larger than the size of a quarter can't be fixed.

Cracks can't be repaired at all.

If I had a million bucks... huh, uh, huh, huh... I'd buy a new butt. Mine's got a crack in it.

Holy god damn! That would really suck to do. I always wondered if you could sort-of "connect the dots" and fill up a whole line. The way the service traditionally works is by drilling into the contact point and injecting resin between the two layers of glass that make up your "shatterproof" windshield. This makes the chip far less noticeable by way of eliminating from view the pocket of air and glass fragments created at the time of impact. It also seals the two layers back together to prevent further separation and cracking. The pit (point of impact and drilling) is filled with a thicker resin and the whole area is cooked via UV light until hardened. I'm guessing what they're doing in that demo is drilling on both ends of the crack and putting a vacuum on one point while drawing resin in from the other as far as it can go. When it can't go any further, I think they bake what they've completed, then drill a new hole closer to the vacuum source and go at it some more. Crazy.
