XP Professional is not a upgrade from XP home...it will not allow you to install over it as a upgrade...backup any and all settings you want to keep, make sure you have the install disks from any programs you want to use in your new install....and boot from the CD and install it over the old one.

use the Files and Settings transfer wizard to backup any customization you did before you do it.

Ok....I just went and checked....it is possible to upgrade...theoretically...

What (exactly) version of XP Pro are you trying to upgrade to? Does it have a SP(service pack) included on the disc? (it shoud say so if it does)
What version are you currently running? Go to the system applet in the control panel...or right click on My Computer and choose properties....on the front panel of the window that popsup...under system..it should say what version you are running...

    tell me everything it says...

    is the guide to upgrading...

I think it would be much simpler if you just backed up all the data you want to keep, then format your HDD and install it booting from the CD. As a bonus, you get rid of all the miscellaneous crap that we build up on our computers as time goes by.

Yeah, all the programs you've had on your hard drive slows down your registry over time. A clean reformat might make Windows noticably faster. Backing up your files is also good for the occasional virus that slips through antivirus scanners.

    ok....

A possibilty is that the XP Pro you are tryin to install does not have SP2 builtin...whereas, the version you have on there currently has SP2....therefore, it is a newer version than the one you are tryin to install.

if this is the case...you may be forced to go with a clean install.

does it say anything about a service pack(SP) on the Pro disk you have?

have you looked at the upgrade link I gave earlier?

If so, was that the procedure that you tried already?

well....we'll give it one last ditch effort before I tell you there isnt any other way other than to blow out what youhave already and clean install.

When you attempt to upgrade in Windows, or boot from the CD...what happens...you say it doesnt work...but you dont say what happens...what error message are you getting?...(as accurate as possible )

I get this error message when i insert the CD "Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the CD. " I happens right when i click on "Install Windows Xp". I hope i can resolve this problem but if i cant i guess i will try the reformat idea.

    Last ditch effort ...

you said that you tryed uninstalling all the updates.....did that include uninstalling SP2?

IF you cant uninstall SP2, then you are virtually screwed...you might as well backup what you want...and do a clean install.
