So I'm having this odd issue with WMP. Whenever I go to a website that has a video or audio file in .wmv format, it doesn't play. It's been like this for a week. I did update to version 11 (beta), and it may be because of it. However I don't think it will be fixed if I go back to 10 (I'll try again). What happens is it just says 'Ready' in the status bar. Even after pressing play, nothing happens. I don't know what it is or how to fix it. Not sure if it's an ActiveX issue or maybe even Javascript(?). Same thing happens on both FireFox and IE (version 7 beta). And for that matter, I'm still having problems with anything Javascript...certain Javascript popup links won't work. Say I want to play CNN.com or Yahoo.com video...neither work...I click the link, it pops up, but it's blank. Since I can't figure out how to fix it and since Sony offers virtually no software support, who or where could I take it to that's good at software bugs? Should I try to call Microsoft directly?
Most CNN, Yahoo.com or other embedded-type video players use JavaScript, so that may be where the entire thing gives you an error. Try just loading a page that doesn't use any JavaScript to play a clip, and maybe it will work, hence eliminating the possibility of it being only a Windows Media Player bug on your PC. Can you play remote movies, songs, etc. in WMP without having it in the browser? Can you play local movies on WMP? You may start your troubleshooting there. I will try to find you a page with an embedded automatic WMP file that doesn't use JavaScript. Here is an automatic WMP song (should start playing a prelude Guitar song): http://devedge-temp.mozilla.org/viewsource/2003/windows-media-in-netscape/index_en.html
Well I figured out the problem a few days ag...had to do with Windows not recognizing my network/internet connections. A simple reconfiguring my network settings is all that was needed. Now another question I have is more hardware...my power adapter for this laptop seems to be getting really really hot after about 30 minutes. I used to have it plugged in all the time, and I don't recall it ever being so hot. Of course it was behind a desk. I'm now using this on a couch. While the power adapter makes for a very good heating pad, is it safe? And by hot I mean reallllllly hot. It's as hot as touching the hood of a car in the blazing sun, and it doesn't cool down to room temp for about 20 minutes.
