Hey, any tech people here? I would appreciate if I could get some feedback about a problem with my Windows Explorer (note: not Internet explorer).

I'm using HP Pavillion dv9700 notebook PC, 3GB RAM, 1.83 ghz.

When my computer starts up, after a few minutes, my windows explorer becomes unresponsive, and I am forced to restart it. This also happens when I open one of my folders, such as "my computer" or "control panel". The problem is temporarily fixed by restarting the windows explorer (I don't have to restart my computer), but after a few minutes, the problem occurs again.

I can still use other programs such as the internet, and browse fine, it's just that when my windows explorer freeze, I can't open the start menu, or click on anything at the bottom of my screen.

Anyone know what could be the problem?

    Thanks.

Is this Windows 7, Vista, or XP?

    Have you tried System Restore?

Vista. Sorry I forgot to mention that. And yes, I tried System Restore to a point yesterday where it was working fine. But it's still acting up a bit.

Not a fix, but the next time your explorer.exe dies...

    Ctrl-Alt-Del
    Task Manager
    File->New Task(Run)
    Type "explorer.exe" and hit OK.

I've had similar problems in the past. If I remember correctly, it was because Vista is frikken r****ded.

This Thanksgiving, I'm thankful for Windows 7.

Is this a new problem or has it been going on for a while?

Order of things I'd do is:

    1. Go through the list of running processes and see which ones are hogging the cpu cycle/memory usage. If they aren't necessary programs, uninstall them.

    2. Go to Start->Run->type "msconfig", hit OK->Startup tab.
Find out which programs you don't need to autorun upon booting up, and uncheck them from the list.

    3. Use antivirus, spybot, disk error checker, defragmenter, etc.

    4. When the above fails, reformat to Win7.

    5. When #4 fails, get a new computer. ;)

Yes, I think that might be the explanation here.

Thanks! I'm currently running a virus scan, and I'll try the first 2 afterwards.
