Does he realize that this isn't practice. It's like ok Mobley, you just do what ever the hell you want. Don't keep your head in the game, tie up the game, then put up a quick jack. Then jack on up becuase you can't read the clock. Keep your head out of the refs face and in the game. Damn good player, with a 5 cent head for the game. Just IMHO...
I AGREE. He's the one who kept us in the game, and he's the one who cost us big time with his STUPID shots. I was frozen in shock after his shot with 13 secs left on the shot clock. Sheesh he needs to learn how to control himself, for the love of God.
Cmon MObes! with 13 secs left. one shot to win. your defender hits the floor. take one dribble and shoot the 13-15 foot jumper! instead he tries to take it in against Oneal and company! MAN!
Would you rather us not have Mobley. He was money all throughout the first half even though he had been hurt. He played some really good D on Kobe. He made a boneheaded mistake, yes. We wouldn't even of been in the game without him. On the shotclock situation, don't you think everyone should remind everyone how much time is on the clock, I mean there is 30 seconds left in the game, something should be said.
No one said he sucks...just that time in and time out he takes illadvised shots, or make mental errors in key situation. In regard to someone saying something to him about the shot clock???? How about Cat saying something to himself like....um...ok Mobes...there's 30 on the clock...13 on the shot clock. If I get the ball set up the offense, look for a high pick and roll...drive to the hole, draw a foul with hopes of making my layup or look to dish off. If I count right, he's one of the 5 good guys on the court...who was he reminding that there was only 3 seconds on the shot clock?
You guys are nuts. Mobley played great in his first game back from a bum ankle. Him and Stevie BOTH blew their chances to win the game however. I was dissapointed Kobe kept on scoring on him, but he is 3 inches shorter and someone taller like Walt ot Glen needs to be the Kobe, Carter, Stack, Allen-type stopper. Yeah, right.
Give me a break. The clock said three seconds at the time of the jump ball, and the officials are not supposed to reset the shotclock to 14, as I understand it. Cuttino has played basketball his entire life, and it's hard to expect him to notice every bad call by the ref and immediately take advantage.
A player who's thinking properly always ALWAYS checks the clock on a jump ball. You slow down for a second to get your bearings, CHECK THE CLOCK, and plan from there. Cat may have been playing ball all his life, but wouldn't come across a shot clock until college, when he should have picked up the habit. But he did not, at least not as well as he shoud have, and it doesn't matter whether the ref made a bad call or not.
just because a timekeeper set the clock wrong, does not mean that will stand. Thank you, thank you, The Cat. I didn't see the clock, thinking in my head we better get a shot off quick. We were trying to figure this out in the stands. All I know is that play started with 45 seconds on the clock, and Francis got tied up (by ... who??? Lindsey Hunter. Nice go to game there Stevie....Curly's boy, but I digress). After the shot...there was 24 seconds on the clock. The Cat is right. There was only supposed to be 3 seconds on that clock after Stevie got tied up. If the homer timekeeper reset it, he was wrong. And I'm sure that would have been caught by Phil or another ref. btw: was that NOT a sweet, very simple move Cat made on Kobe to get to the lane forcing the foul. Kobe was on his heels and was beat. Cat came up big with a very simple move to tie it...against a top defender....not Lindsey Hunter. Cat also made another move to the lane in the overtime to pass Kobe, draw Shaq and find Willis for a slam. How can we blame Cat for thinking too much in almost identical situation at the end when Kobe falls again and Shaq has to help, again. Willis was wide open, but failed to shield Fox. Moses Malone would have snared that pass. Shaq would have, too!
Mobley did check the clock. It said 3 seconds. Is it his fault the refs later made a bad call after he looked? Is he supposed to do nothing but look at the shot clock, anticipating a bad call and then the clock being changed? Is he supposed to ignore commands from Rudy, teammates, etc., all to watch anticipate the very unlikely scenario of a bad call? I can almost guarantee if Steve did the same thing there wouldn't even be one complaint outside of crispee...
Fine, then couldn't have Cat checked the clock again right before he released the ball and then executed a spectacular alley-oop pass/three point play?
See, your dead wrong on this. He dribbled himself into a corner like a dumbass, and Hunter overplayed becuse of the previos posession when Francis worked him. There all my boys...even Cato....but not that inflatable ball thing or what ever the hell it was on the court??? What was that?
So, you were at the game!!! Then I forgive you! That inflatable ball thing was literally sh!ting basketballs out its seams. Who came up with that one? Did someone here suggest that when Jeff posted that "tell the rockets what you want" thing for the Promotions guy? Hey R0ckets03? and rockHEAD, those cool plastic basketballs are some nifty free things aren't they?
It was funny cause you could literally see the guys hands (the person inside the ball) sticking the balls out the seams. My idea for a promotion now is to have them throw something near my section... in the last two seasons, I've never gotten anywhere near something they throw up into the stands.
So what was with the "birth" of that plastic bball thing? I didn't get the whole tap the wand on the box and out comes a a bball with legs? It went over like a lead balloon anyway - everyone around me was like "wtf?" The refs and timekeepers did not screw up the shot clock. d. The 24-second clock shall remain the same as when play was interrupted or reset to 14 seconds, whichever is greater, anytime the following occurs: (1) Personal foul by the defense where ball is being inbounded in frontcourt (2) Defensive three-second violation (3) Technical fouls and/or delay-of-game warnings on the defensive team (4) Kicked or punched ball by the defensive team with the ball being inbounded in the offensive team's front-court (5) Infection control (6) Jump balls retained by the offensive team as the result of a held ball caused by the defense (7) All flagrant and punching fouls http://www.nba.com/analysis/rules_7.html?nav=ArticleList As a minimum, the shot clock is reset to 14 seconds after a jump ball. I knew the rule, Cat should have known the rule. If he wasn't sure about the rule, he can spare the half second required to check the freakin red numbers above the glass. Don't try and tell me they changed the clock after/during the jumpball - I was there and saw it reset to 14 immediately after the play.
I was there too, and the clock remained at 3 for several seconds after Hunter and Francis were tied up. Also, I don't know how long that rule has been in effect, but I have seen that identical scenario of a late jump ball play out several times in the past few years, and never before last night was the shot clock reset.
What the hell is a "jump ball retained by the offensive team?" It isn't "retained" until after the jump???? So, are they saying that it is set back to 14 the moment Mobley gets possession (retaining the ball), whereas if there is a scramble the shot clock can go off from 3 seconds. this is weird. Davo, thanks for the ruling, but are you absolutely sure that clock showed 14 seconds BEFORE the jump. The rule does not sound like it should move yet. That's one weird rule. And I'm with The Cat...time and time again in the history of watching basketball, the offense is not awarded time for a tie-up. I think that new ruling states that the clock should have shown 3 seconds until Mobley comes down with the ball. Mobley didn't know the ruling; I didn't know it; but that clock was 3 seconds...
I watched it closely-- the clock did move to 14 before the jump ball. There was a little bit of a delay, though.
then what does "retain" mean? Why doesn't the ruling just say (6) On jump balls. Can anyone explain to me why it says "retained," other than to not set it to 14 until after the offense gets the ball back. Is there like more than one type of jump ball not covered by the other rulings in that description?
