This is an article from sina talking about the possibility of Yao refuse to sign max extenstion with Rockets this summer, and I think it's a legitimate concern.

    http://sports.sina.com.cn/k/2005-08-11/11401713924.shtml

Based on new CBA, if Yao signs MAX extesnsion with Rockets this summer, he'll get $74,860,875 for 5 years, plus 5.96mil for this year, that's around 81 million for 6 years. But if he wait until next summer, the max contract will be $93,740,625 for 6 years, plust 5.96mil, it's close to 100 mil for 7 years.

Of course, Yao may get another max contract offter after the first one,but there is also a possibilty that he gets injured during his first max contract period. I believe Yao is loyal to Rockets and will sign with Rockets , but if you were Yao, what would you do? this summer or next summer?

    81 mil 6 year = 13.5 mil /year
    100 mil 7 year = 14.28 mil .year

    About 5 mil difference.

But I am sure is going to make more than 5 mil per year on the next contract even if he only has one leg. So sign now. Makes financial sense. What if he's injured this coming season.

Well, I'd just get that money inked and worry bout that extra year when it comes. Yao will be 30 when the extension ends, he'll be well worthy of that 19 million dollar salary. Trust me, he's got more than one contract left in him. What if he gets seriously injured next year, and he's not signed? Then he gets almost nothing.

If Yao doesn't sign this summer and gets a serious injury he will have just blown $70M+. That is a bit more than the measly 5M you guys are talking about. That is too huge of a risk for anyone. The only way he doesn't sign is if the Rockets do offer him a contract.

70 million now > 90 million in the bush

    Err... something like that.

Let's speculate on the real question here. Will Yao's participation with summer basketball in China change after he signs a max deal?

Can anyone shine some light on what the Chinese Business Mentality would be??? If its any different.

If Yao doesnt sign an extention this summer I am going to be very worried. The Lakers are going to use Rudy to go after Yao hard.

I'd take the extension now and avoid the risk. It's not even a very large monetary loss to do so.

    No, I doubt it.

Does anyone know what contracts these players signed after finishing their rookie contracts:

    Kenyon Martin F
    Eric Dampier C
    Big Z C
    Nazr Mahamad C
    Mehmet Okur C
    Carlos Boozer F
    Jerome James C

    Just for comparison purpose. Thanks.

Off the top of my head:

    Martin - Max
    Big Z - Max
    Okur - 6 years 50-60 million
    Boozer - 6 years 68 million
Damp - I don't know, but Cuban just gave him 7 years 70+ million last year
James - 5 years 30 million is what he got from the Knicks this summer.

CD should just hand a bag of cash to Yao and tell him the deal is done.

there isn't much differences in terms of the business mentality... mind you the chinese have been learning every thing the "westerners" doing. besides, the yao team are mainly americans, and chinese americans who got their business degrees in the states anyway.

Wow, m_cable is a walking encyclopedia.

Damp 70+ in 7yr? If Yao were to sign the 70 in 5 yr offer, I bet Mark Cuban would want to hang himself on the spot upon hearing the news.

Could refusal of play for the Chinese national teams (excluding Olympics) be inked in the deal? Or would the original deal need to be worked into the new one?

If you guys are worried about that difference in money you're terrible fans. I'd like to sign him this year, only to guarantee that he'll stay a Rocket; and not to screw him out of a few millions. He's done everything that he can for this team. Granted some people aren't totally satisfied with his progress, I'd still like to see him a Rocket man till retirement, along with T-Mac and Swift. I'm really impressed by what Swift did to be with this team, the man has character.

I heard a blurb on the radio today that Yao's reps are looking at a Rocket proposal and it's very likely he will sign before the beginning of the season. Question for someone: Besides Kobe Bryant, what free agents have turned down a max contract while a RFA?

    Ditto.

And as far as his progress, we all know that every team in the league besides Miami would pay him top dollar right now.

I'm sure someone here will, but of course the Rocks offer him the max. And he'll happily sign on the dotted line. I'm not the least bit worried about it. I'm more concerned about his offseason schedule, long term. If he keeps doing what he's been doing, he'll never be the player he could become in the NBA, and he won't last, imo. I would love to be wrong. Hopefully, his schedule will change.

You still sign him to the max, and he's still worth it.
