It just seems like a disaster waiting to happen in terms of Metro UI + Desktop. There's no need for a metro UI on a laptop or desktop. <object style="height: 390px; width: 640px"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/v4boTbv9_nU?version=3&feature=player_detailpage"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/v4boTbv9_nU?version=3&feature=player_detailpage" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="360"></object>
I doubt it will fail like ME or Vista but anything is possible. Windows 7 is so awesome and I agree there is no need for the metro UI on desktops or laptops. This forced convergence is not what I want, but MS felt compelled to do it. Did they feel Apple was going that direction and wanted to beat them to the punch? Regardless, a whole lot of people will like it and I'll stay open-minded. We are happily locked into Android on our mobile phones with no plans to change. Where I see Windows 8 being useful is tablets. My wife wants a used iPad this summer so I'll have to get that soon. For my son and myself, I'm waiting on Windows 8. It better be $200.00 or less and not a complete piece of junk. I don't want to watch much video. Just surf the net & email. I hope Windows 8 tablets succeed where Android has flopped.
I'm anxious to run it on a media center-type PC. Metro would be bad ass on an HDTV with a wireless keyboard/touchpad.
I doubt it will be that bad. I'd probably look just as dumb trying to use any completely new operating system like Linux or Ubuntu or OS X for me. I've been in big need of a comp upgrade for a while. Will probably do it on a Windows 8 comp.
ya but the problem is Metro apps seem to be running in their own world. it's like having your office split into two. doesn't seem very efficient to me. and yes i am running it on my pc.
Running it since consumer edition and love it. Try a slate with windows 8..... Not an outdated desktop. I
I'm sure Win8 is nice for tablets, but this seems like a poor OS for desktop-centric businesses... I feel like Windows should have simply split the two OS's - metro for its attempt to get back into the personal consumer base that they've completely lost....and a traditional low frills simple and secure OS for the cubicles.
Short answer no. Long answer hell no. Windows 8 is slated to run on pcs, phones, Xbox's and tablets. It isn't an incremental change, it is a massive overhaul. If you think it will fail, it means that you are a myopic fool.
Exaggerating much? It takes less than 5 mins for anyone to figure out how to switch from desktop to start screen. Even idiot like RedRedVagina wouldn't have a problem figuring it out. Look at Android. Now that was confusing as hell at the beginning. Don't see any problem with new users adapting. No way this will be a failure. This is going to tremendously help their laptops and tablets sale. But they going to need those APPS right from the starting gate. Best OS since Windows 7. I'm getting the best of both world. Less than 15 seconds to boot up and 5 seconds to shut down with my SSD. If only they incorporate this UI into their Desktop than they will have a winner. The integration of the desktop and tablet environments is a cluster****. The problem with Metro is that it isn't a simple window manager - it's an entirely new environment which is why non-Metro apps to run in a sandboxed desktop effectively dividing the experience. Metro should've been a WM and compatible with old programs.
Not that I think it will fail, but Vista was a fairly significant overhaul of XP. The scope of the change (nor Microsoft's desire for/focus on it's success) really isn't a guarantee of anything. And personally, I think it has to be fairly well received on the desktop side in order for it to have a real impact on the tablet and phone side.
