    Question:

Ok I just got a new HD LED TV (Samsung Series 6) and I have Direct TV (with

no HD services yet) after I had everything setup and did the picture

calibration on the TV. I notice a big different in the picture quality when I'm

watching my Blu-ray or HD files from my computer that's plug up to my TV

compare to my sold SONY LCD TV I just sold.

BUT when I'm watching my Direct TV the picture quality is

noticeably worst than my previous Sony TV.

So my question is without getting the HD service from Direct TV could I just

buy a Direct TV HD Receiver from like ebay or craiglist and use that instead

since it uses a HDMI output. But would it make the picture even alil better?

I called Direct TV but they want $99 for the box with $19 shipping and

would need to get HD service (which they dont have for the Chinese package).

anyway just wondering would getting a HD box on ebay for $30-60 help and

could I get an older model H10 or H20 (new one is H21) to work too?

    thanks.

Unless you are actually tuned to an HD channel, I would think the difference would be insignificant.

Maybe I am mistaken, but even non-HD channels on both Dish and DirectTV non HD receivers are digital.

One of the smartest thing I did when I bought my plasma last year was to go to all the stores and see which one looked best in SD, rather than HD, since most channels are still in SD.

If you never had HD with direcTV, you will require a new dish. You will also start paying $10 extra for the HD service.

DO NOT buy off ebay or any other unofficial place. These are leased receivers and DirecTV will not activate them.

SD is just that. .. standard def. Putting a lower quality picture on a high def. TV exposes the poorer picture quality. Natually, SD tv's will look better.

If you have been with DirecTV longer than a year, you might be able to keep calling until you get a rep who will help you out on costs. Speak to the retention department and tell them you are considering leaving. Tell them Dish is adv HD for 9.99 a month and you will go with with their HD service for 9.99 a month (a six month promotion - if you have less than 6 months remaining on your contract) and that you WILL perm switch to Dish once your contract is up.

No, its all digital. Thats why you need a receiver.(well, part of the reason)
