Iraqi court disqualifies prominent Sunni candidates

By Nancy A. Youssef and Huda AhmedKnight Ridder Newspapers

BAGHDAD, Iraq - An Iraqi court has ruled that some of the most prominent Sunni Muslims who were elected to parliament last week won't be allowed to serve because officials suspect that they were high-ranking members of Saddam Hussein's Baath Party.

Knight Ridder has obtained a copy of the court ruling, which has yet to be circulated to the public.

The ruling is likely to dampen Bush administration hopes that the election would bring more of the disaffected Sunni minority into Iraq's political process and undermine Sunni support for the insurgency. Instead, the decision is likely to stoke fears of widening sectarian divisions in a nation already in danger of descending into civil war.

On the contrary now is a far better time to start withdrawing and look to cutting deals with the UN and international community to take up peacekeeping duties. Even though there are big problems with this last election it has at least given the Iraqi government a veneer of legitimacy as the elected Iraqi government as opposed to the interim governments that were truly puppets of the US. If the struggle in Iraq becomes more about Sunnis fighting Shiites rather than Iraqis looking to kick out Americans then that becomes a much more legitimate peacekeeping exercise rather than the perception of coming in and fighting for the US like the current coalition.

What I'm hearing from a lot of you are that the elections were a bad idea and have gone badly. I believe the elections were a good idea and even though there have been some major problems were still a good step. The mere fact that many of Sunnis voted is a positive sign

I agree though that the real danger is now that the Sunnis have voted will they have faith in democracy coming out on the losing end and in light of fraud?

As I proposed in the thread "My solution to Iraq" I still think the best solution would be to have the UN step in. That's going to take a lot of diplomatic skill that I'm not sure this Admin. has.

Well the elections were an ok idea and went as well as could be expected. Just like an American soldier giving some clean water to a baby when we have destroyed the water supply, it is a little so what type of step in terms of making amends for the horrible war we started. The elections appear to ratify the split up of Iraq into three countries.

In an abstract way elections are good. Why not? the Sunnis have decided to fight at the ballot box as well as the battle front. The military solution will largely govern. There appears a chance that the US will tire and decide to negotiate with the Sunni resistance if they can avoid giving Iran too much of a victory.

It is true that a frudulent election run under foreign military occupation does engender dispespect for the formal aspects of elections, especially when the realiity is denied and it is presented by the foreign aggressor as a panacoea and an excuse for the war.

Why would the UN want to bail the US out of this mess? We are a rogue UN nation. We started the war without UN support. Consider we have Bolton, a famous UN hater, as our rep. We are usually behind in our dues and threatening not to pay.
