Will Scola go to Europe again? How much do we need to pay him for an extension?

With so many NBA-calibre players go for euro, i.e. Nacbar 3 year/9milion euro, Childress 3 years/$20milion (probably). How much do you think we need to pay Scola to keep him in 2 years? I know Scola really want to play in NBA but what he is earning is not that much for arguably the best player in Europe. Scola will not be young in two years, but with his style of play, his skills, and the NBA experience he will have obtained, he will be in his prime in 2 years. Scola has been in Europe and there was a rumor that he may go back to play in Europe, this is something we really need to consider.

I think he's still under contract for the next 2 seasons.

My opinion is that this should be addressed after his contract is over. It will depend on his production over the next 2 years.

Scola didn't come to the NBA for money. He could have gotten much more than 3mil a year. He came here to play with the best competition.

But he will be paid a lot more next contract.

Agreed. He loves NBA, he loves Hoston. Money is not the most important to him.

At his pay, it's almost unfair. 3 million dollars, with tax? I'd feel obligated to pay him more than his worth at his next contract, just for his sacrifice the past season, and the next two.

We should offer a nice extension for him next year if he does well this season - don't wait until he becomes a free agent.

After this season, we will know what he is made of.

You do realize he took a paycut and had to finance the rest of his buyout, because we were limited to 500k for his buyout.

If one day, most euro league players get paid more, wouldn't that mean euro league have overall better talents? After all, it's a team game. If that day comes, taking a paid cut will also mean take on a less competition. Then as a competitor, Scola should be dying to play in europe. :)

I hope he doesn't go anywhere... Scola quickly became one of the core contributers to our team.

I also think money isn't a huge issue for him. If he goes back to Europe, he'll easily be the best player again and it won't be as much fun for him. I think he stays.

Can you substantiate that rumor that he is considering going back to Europe after his current contract?

He certainly did.I wonder how much he is making after paying for the buyout and taxes. We are fortunate to have him. Hopefully he will make the Spurs and the others squirm more over the next 2 years.

The question should be, supposing Scola does well, not great, the next 2 years.

Let´s say he ends averaging 14/8.

Scola will count against the cap as a max contract because he will be a restricted FA.

So we will have to let him go or sign him quick in order to have space enough to a big signing. (right now we have only 25 millions in salaries for the 10/11 season but we have only 2 players under contract, 11 shy of the league minimum)

The other option is to use the early bird rights next year, that will allow us to sign him for 175% of his actual contract (3.375*1,75=5.8 millions) or the MLE (without actually USING the MLE). I say we can offer him a contract there worth 3/4 years, or if he surpasses his potential we can give him a 1 year extension (again next year) and then after that extension expires we will have full bird rights on him, but we will be talking about 2011 when we have (supposedly) our new team assembled.

    My 2 cents

Because of the sacrifice Scola made to crossover to the NBA ... It's good that he was able to go to a team that can offer a Chinese shoe contract and help him out a little.
