Another of his nearly weekly articles bashing Howard Dean. For whatever reason he tends to stick pretty much to the Republican message on the so-called character flaws of Dean. ****************** link Dean trashing is a near obsession with Saletan. Also with Lieberman and the neocons., and despite Saletan's denial, with the Democratic Leadership Conference as well. What is the deal with Saletan? Is Slate against Dean? I have to admit that I never noticed Saletan until his continual string of pro-war and anti-Howard Dean articles. What is going on?
Slate's got kind of a counter-counterculture deal going on sometimes, the moment something gets too cool, they kind of trash it, just for attention and clicks and kicks, seemingly. But that seems to permeate the whole place, from movie reviews to political commentary to sports writing. Remember Will's big time Shark trashing article from a few years ago? That seemed like a shameless populist publicity stunt to me. I also recall when Emily somebody wrote a damning review of "Six Feet under" People were horrendously offended, so what did Slate do? they put it up on the front page for 48 straight hours. Don't get me wrong, it has some very good pieces and by and large is an excellent publication, but some pieces I think they write just to get a rise out of people in a tabloidy way.
Maybe glynch doesn't know he is our poster Will? In that case, it is almost a compliment to call him Saletan...like you would talk about a celebrity...
I did know that. Calling him by his first name, when I really don't know him seemed like a slight. Care for substantive response, Rimbaud?
Well, technically it would be his moniker not his first name... Didn't know you were so courtly, glynch!
Substantive? No thanks. It was in line with what giddy said, he chose Will as his moniker here and that is what everyone calls him on this bbs. I knew that you knew this and thought it was odd that you chose to buck the trend and use a less friendly (and often negative, given the context) way of addressing him and his article. In any event, no big deal...I just found it odd and was curious.
Will does not need to be fair. Dean needs to take as many hard knocks as possible so that if and when he goes head against GWB in the general election he will be ready for Rove's attacks.
I think it's a good article, but the title is a little much for what is discussed in the piece. Of course the title does grab your attention more than most articles on Dean. How many boring write-ups of Dean alienating himself from the rest of the Dems can we read or would we want to read? You have to spice things up a bit I guess…
Would you consider the substance of his message instead? Just because you criticize someone doesn't automatically mean you hate them or want them to lose. The flaws he is exposing are flaws that could end up hurting the Democratic Party. Dean is attacking the groups that won the presidency for the Dems in the 90's. What the heck is he thinking?
It's no different from the blogger Mickey Kaus at Slate calling himself a Democrat and *only* criticizing Democrats. He's a "Card" Democrat.
Has anybody else here noticed Dean bellyaching about not being treated well by the other Dem hopefuls? If he cannot take the relatively civil discourse of politics during the primaries, he should hang 'em up now. He wouldn't survive a general election.
