Will Ming ever play the perimeter?

I think Ming should get his feet wet down low early on, which is where he has been playing this early season. Which is quite unlike where EG started. However, just as a change of pace, will the coaches create a set or a few plays where Ming will bring his defender outside and look to throw up some 3's? Isn't Ming a pretty steady shooter from outside? Wouldn't this also open up outlets to the guards for easy penetration with no one big in the middle?

I was just curious if this has been done or not, or if it would even work. Comments?

Eventually I think we will see some high post work out of Yao but right now I think he is just getting used to the style and speed of the NBA game. You make some valid points about clearing out the lane but with zone D now allowed this is not really as effective as it used to be.

i think eventually you'll see shoot some perimeter jumpers as a complementary shot to a developed low post game. however, at this point, i think the rockets staff feels he should maximize his height in the minutes he is getting. you don't take a 7'6" guy, play him 15-18 minutes and have him shoot jumpers. you work on the post game.

besides ming's personal development, it is what the entire TEAM needs from ming right now. we need another low post threat. do you realize that our best low post threat is kenny thomas? i like kenny a whole lot, but i realize that there is a great chance he will not be back next year. that leaves us with approximately, um, zero post options. that's why it's so crucial to keep ming in the post.

ming's outside game isn't going anywhere, if you're concerned about him "forgetting how to shoot" ;) in fact, in the future i'd like to see him mixing up the inside/outside game about the same rate as an antonio davis - about 75% inside and 25% outside (just w/more range than davis).

I agree verse, we need to balance things out with a post threat, but at the same time Yao cant let guys like Dale Davis play 5ft off of him when he is facing the basket. He has to make them pay for that! And I think he will, eventually.
